Default birthday cake help

My son wants a chess board birthday cake this year. Sounds simple
enough. However, instead of using plastic chess pieces, he wants to
know if they could be edible. He thinks it would be fun to play the
game and eat the pieces that he takes. I found a chocolate chess set
online yesterday that included a chocolate game board, but it was
$40.00, which is more than I'm willing to spend on cake decorations.
I thought of using gummi bears for pawns, but I'm not sure if there
are enough other gummi varieties that can stand up that would work for
all the rest. Any other ideas?

Thanks!

How about cookies? Make sugar cookie or gingerbread dough and some chess piece
shapes, and cut around the shapes on the rolled-out dough.

There are some candy molds at this site that might work for you.

Why stick with gummies? Go to a good kid-style candy store and see what
you can find. Although I rather like the idea someone else suggested of
making the pieces out of cookie dough, then baking.

You can also make the pieces out of marzipan, if you're good at forming
figures with clay. That's how many bakers make edible decorations. You
can purchase tubes of marzipan at some grocery stores, add a little food
coloring as needed.

hmmmm....

teddy graham cookies in choc. and vanilla. you can decorate them with piped
icing...ie: draw an appropriate crown for king & queen...maybe holding a
sceptor...can you do something to them to indicate the other
ieces...hmmm...it was my 1st thought.

hersheys kisses for pawns..they come in different colors...

i think mix & match candies would work...you can even assemble pieces using
icing for glue.

my guess is you are still going to spend 40$ in the end!

Thanks, Nikki. This would be perfect. However, his birthday is on
the 23rd, so I've put this off too long for me to be able to order it
and get it in time. Well, I suppose I could pay $15 for 2-day
shipping, but that seems ridiculous for a $2.25 item. It does give me
hope that I might be able to find something locally though. I'm off
to the craft store.
