Default Introduction

I don't know why it took me so long to think of Usenet, given that
pregnancy message boards on the web have been driving me crazy...

Hi, I'm Rivka, and I'm 19 weeks pregnant with my first.

I'm a 31-year-old psychologist living in Baltimore MD with my
37-year-old husband, who works on a magazine. First baby for both of
us, so we're simultaneously excited and scared.

We're having a midwife-attended hospital birth - and probably a water
birth. So far the pregnancy has gone quite smoothly, except for one
thing. I had scoliosis surgery when I was thirteen, and the incision
from that surgery curves halfway around my body, from my stomach to my
back. In the last few weeks, I've had a lot of pain in the incision
area, mostly when I've been sitting for a while. My midwife thinks
that my ligaments are pulling at scar tissue, which is exactly as
comfortable as it sounds.

But other than that, things are good: I feel well (except for the
pain) and the baby looked great on our ultrasound! I even think I'm
starting to feel her move.

I've been enjoying reading the posts here, and I'm looking forward to
being part of the group.

Welcome, Rivka, and congratulations. I think you will like it here.

My husband is from Baltimore--his mother still lives there, in Colgate, and we
get up there about once a year. Which part are you in?

We live right downtown, in a neighborhood called Mount Vernon. It's
Baltimore's arts district - we've got a dozen museums, theaters,
concert halls, etc. within walking distance of our house.

Anyone else here an urban/central city parent?

Oh, that sounds wonderful! Our current retirement plan is to move to a
downtown loft when our kids grow up.

We're two miles from downtown and even walk there on occasion--we attend a lot
of the goings on there. We live in a close-in neighborhood with sidewalks
where we can walk almost anywhere we need to--useful, since we are a one-car
family! And I love it that my big kids can walk to the park, library, or
drugstore.

Oh, that does sound nice. You have the urban advantages and the
suburban advantages together, huh?

Most people around here seem to think that once you have kids you have
an obligation to move out to the suburbs. I really like the idea of
raising Li'l Critter right downtown - I think it will be good for her
perspective to live in a neighborhood that is racially and
economically mixed, and I like that there is so much history and so
many cultural opportunities.

I also think that, when she's a baby, I'm going to enjoy having it be
so easy to leave the house to get a cup of coffee or whatever. I hope
that I'll be a little less stir-crazy than some of my suburban new-mom
friends.

Well us moving to the burbs is a big move for us. Since we live on a
mountain and it takes us 20 mins to get to civilization. We are both
love the country where your closest neighbor is probably a minimum of an
accor away. So us moving to a development is a huge move and will be
getting some use to. But then again this is a great move since hubby is
going to have an awesome job.

I wish that we lived where there were sidewalks. Even though we are moving
to Richmond VA we still will be in the burbs and need to drive everywhere.
But it is a nice quiet neighborhood and we are going to love it there.

Hi Rivka,

I'm also 19 weeks pregnant (heading towards 20 tomorrow) with our first,
and I'm also in the area!

Sorry about the pain you're experiencing. My best wishes to you. I had a
tailbone injury a few years ago and now the pain's back, though not so
severe that I cannot endure.

Have you gotten a flu shot yet? I finally got one yesterday.

Oh wow, how cool! Where are you delivering, if you don't mind my
asking? I'm going to be at Mercy.

I'm going to be starting physical therapy - hopefully that will help.

Where did you get it? My primary doc doesn't have any, and the
Baltimore City Health Dept doesn't have any. I work in an HIV clinic,
and so far they haven't even been able to round up enough vaccinations
for the *patients,* let alone the staff. I think I may be out of luck
this year.

Rivka
