Shameful Neglect
I was walking out of the grocery store this afternoon when I heard an
irate woman exclaim, "I can't *believe* there's a baby in that car!" I walked over to see if my suspicions were correct, and yes indeed, some idiot had left an infant (maybe 3-4 months old) in their car in the middle of the parking lot, with the windows all rolled up. By coincidence, the irate woman who had noticed this was an old neighbor of mine who I had not seen in over 4 years. We could not tell if the baby was still alive -- it was either asleep or dead. I began writing the license plate number of the car down, first thinking that I could go into the grocery store and have the owner paged, then remembering that I was in a sort of strip mall and the owner could be in any of a number of stores. It had dawned on me that we should break a front window with the tire iron I had in my trunk so we could open the back door and get the baby out, when the baby's mother approached the car. The irate woman accosted the mother and asked her what she was doing leaving a baby alone in a car with the windows up on a sunny day (expletives omitted). This lowlife woman, who just oozed "welfare mom", "ignorance", and "just went in for a pack of smokes, what's the big deal?" claimed that she hadn't left the baby alone -- "I sweah ta gawd, my fvend was wit' da baby, I dunno wheah she vent". The woman was a quick liar, but not a very good one. I told her myself that she should have been more careful, she could lose her baby like that. She hopped into her car and drove off. On the way home, I thought of my own little baby and got angrier and angrier. I'm like this. Sometimes, anger doesn't hit me until later. Then I remembered I have the woman's license number in my pocket. I am, after all, obligated to call DCYF about this, aren't I? I'm going to call my old neighbor and see what she's going to do. Don't think I'll have a hard time convincing her to do the right thing. Of course this lying moron probably won custody of the baby from some father because that was in the "best interest of the child". What a laugh. Except it isn't funny at all. Damned woman couldn't even be bothered to carry her baby into the store with her. What a friggin' moron. I feel sorry for her kid. I wish I'd smashed her car window in while I had a good excuse to do so. The stupid cow probably would have demanded I stay and wait for the police to show up so she could shoot herself in the foot telling "her side of the story". - Ron ^*^ |

yes, she is an idiot. A huge one. But I see several of these every year,
even right here in my own city. Most of them are drunks to boot, and what we get is children left in the car for several HOURS as well. This included married couples who came back from a party smashed (note they were drunk at the time they were driving with the child in the car) and then they passed out in their home for hours on end. I wish these idiots would learn. It seems they can't reason well enough to figure out the car is HOT when they come back. I wouldn't be against smashing the window immediately, consequences be damned. If you've got a cell phone, call 911 right after smashing the window. But it's not ALL welfare mothers who do this. Morons. I came home and held my own baby and couldn't keep from crying about it, I was so angry. It was a baby just like him. What if it had been him?!? I know, it wouldn't have been him because I wouldn't DO such a thing, but when you've got a small baby yourself you aren't always rational. I wish these idiots would learn. It seems they can't reason well enough to figure out the car is HOT when they come back. I wouldn't be against smashing the window immediately, consequences be damned. I was just about to do just that, when the degenerate mother showed up. I do wish she had come about 5 minutes later, as I said. If you've got a cell phone, call 911 right after smashing the window. Don't own one. The officer I spoke with later said the same thing -- "You should've called that in right away". As if everyone owns a cel phone. :^/ But it's not ALL welfare mothers who do this. Where did I say that? I think there are SOME welfare mothers who have legitimate reasons to be what they are. I think there are also a lot of people riding the gravy train because they are too lazy to be bothered taking care of themselves when the government and their exes will do just fine. I also think it is highly likely that this woman, stupid and ignorant as she is, would have won custody of her child in a family court as a matter of course. This is unacceptable. - Ron ^*^ |

Shameful Neglect
Not only should child protection be involved, but what this woman did
is a crime and she should be arrested for it. Heck, you don't even know for sure whether the baby is still alive and the police may already be involved wishing they had enough evidence to convict. I do take issue that you turn this into a potential bad custody award issue, however, given that you have no further information. For all anyone knows, she is married to the baby's father and they live with him. Fact of the matter is, even when there is a father in the home, there are still a multitude of families where the mother (good or bad) is expected to (for lack of a better way to phrase this) act as though she is the sole parent, taking the kids with her to the market because the father doesn't want to "babysit." I believe that it is THIS family model that contributes to the courts awarding the mother custody in most cases. The courts make an assumption whether correct or not. I am not arguing that mother's SHOULD get custody... only that co-parenting needs to continue to the point where courts see IT as the norm rather than the above family model. I see co-parenting happening more and more in educated families, even those with a stay at home mom, but have not seen it too much with the uneducated. As for the mother with the baby in the car, there is NO excuse, whether she lives with the baby's father or not. Criminal neglect may be the father's only hope in GETTING custody and, if he lives with them, to PROTECT his child. At any rate, this woman should not be entrusted with a baby because she obviously does not make good decisions. "Werebat" wrote in (expletives omitted). This lowlife woman, who just oozed "welfare mom", "ignorance", and "just went in for a pack of smokes, what's the big deal?" It sounds like this is a normal routine for this woman, please report her to child proctective services before it's too late. At least she'll think twice about just popping in for smokes or worse yet, go shopping and then you'll read about it in the paper. That small child needs to be monitored by somebody responsible enough to save it's life. |

My GF and others have expressed shock and disgust at what happened, but told me that DCYF is unlikely to do anything based on a phone call unless the woman was caught red-handed (i.e. if we had called the police via cel when first seeing the baby and the police had arrived before the mother). Still, I have figured out what state the plates were and plan to call the police and DCYF on Monday morning, as well as locate the other witness and try to convince her to call (she may have already done so). I was told, "They won't do anything over one random call", but who knows? I might be the THIRD or FOURTH person reporting this idiot. And still, I wish she had arrived 5 minutes later so I could have smashed her ****ing window. - Ron ^*^ |

You can probably count on a few already there, but it's best to at least start a paper trail! Maybe a documented letter from you and the other witness might be taken more seriously than a phone call. CC it to your local state rep too and have them follow it up. Let them do something real to protect the children or at least this little guy. |

In my stepson's case, there were 15 reports by 9 different people and they
STILL failed to respond until she finally was so out of control she punched another child in the face. We had police photographs (this child was told it was HIS fault his mother beat him), we had a DA drop the charges (they weren't sure if the beating that left welts on his back that scabbed over occurred during or after disclipline), and his mother's parents were pulling strings influencing the outcome to that severe level of denial. He'd had bite marks at various points, he'd been hit so hard across the face to leave a handprint (blood blister on the ear, temporary hearing loss), and we couldn't get anyone to do anything about it. We're lucky we got him when we did. She ended up dead and even Child Protection Services conceded in the end that had he been with her, he'd be gone too.
