DCF temporarily suspends visits to foster children to save gas

Miami, Florida - To conserve gasoline, state child welfare
administrators are temporarily suspending required monthly visits to
nearly 50-thousand children in foster care.

Department of Children and Families' Family Safety program director
Beth Englander says the requirement for caseworkers to visit foster
children every month would be relaxed for 90 days.

Caseworkers would instead be allowed to make monthly phone calls to
foster parents or teachers, pediatricians or other professionals who
come in contact with the children.

The program director also says that for high-risk children or those in
unstable living arrangements, caseworkers and their supervisors should
determine "the minimum frequency of contact."

D-C-F officials say that the emergency policy wouldn't jeopardize
children in foster care.
