Default Baby not interested in rolling over?

I gave up on trying not to be a paranoid new mom ;-)

At 3.5 months DD had her checkup with the developmental specialist who
declared all as well developmentally, no residual effects from the
birth/nicu/drugs. She was doing everything she should do and more at
that point. Around that time she started almost rolling over, usually
using something as leverage to kick herself over. Then a few weeks
later she stopped, and hasn't bothered since. She's 6 months now, and
still not rolling over. Actually, she's closer to sitting up on her own
-not entirely yet, I still need to keep a hand there, but I can strap
her in a shopping cart, for example, and she does fine. She's even
trying to crawl - she watches the 8.5 month old at daycare who just
started really crawling and she tries to copy him. . She can hold her
head up no problem.

But rolling over? Nope. We work with her to encourage it, and she'll go
at it a couple of times, then give up and contentedly go back to
chewing on whatever is within arms' reach, even if it's only her hands.
Our next appt with the developmental pedi is in March, tho we have her
6 month check up next week and I'll ask the pedi then. Just wondering
if anyone has had a non-roller?

(She also used to squirm like mad, easily turning 180+ degrees on her
back, but now she doesn't at all)

First, a disclaimer. I've never had a child with a developmental
delay, or physical disability, so I wouldn't know what it would look
like.

That said, neither of my children were big rollers, and my daughter in
particular didn't like to do it. My nephew used to roll all the way
across the room, so I was expecting something like that. But while I
remember my daughter rolling front to back some, I'm not sure she ever
rolled back to front in her life (Well, she's 11 now, so she *must*
have done so at some point!). And since she hated being on her tummy
with a fiery passion, we rarely put her that way, and so mostly she
didn't roll at all. She also never really scooted around. And in
fact, up until she started cruising at 10 months or so, I could put
her down anywhere, and come back completely confident that she'd be
right where I left her.

If she's 6 months old now, isn't she do for another well baby check?
If so, it doesn't hurt to mention your concerns to the doctor. But
given what you say she is doing, it doesn't sound like there's cause
for concern to me (remember the disclaimer!).

#1 rolled a couple of times (literally, once from front to back and once
from back to front) before she was 6 months. I was not sure whether it was
an accident or deliberate as she didn't do it again! She then didn't roll
over again until she was 9 months and had started crawling. Suddenly she
found a use for rolling-if she was put on her back then she needed to be on
her front to crawl, so she rolled.
Physically developmentally she was usually at the end of normal, but she has
no problems at all at keeping up with the rest of her peers.

One of mine was a bit like this: she rolled about twice before her
8 month check, but it wasn't something she did much.

She's perfectly healthy and normal, but she just doesn't like
being active. My other two were quite different.

Her development is progressing. That is all that matters. If she had
stopped do anything new, had not gotten stronger, developed more muscle
tone I'd say you had a reason to be concerned but it sounds like she
just doesn't care to roll over. She'll probably just skip to crawling
to get what she wants.

Anecdote time:

I wasn't rolling over at 8 months but my mom could sit me up and I'd
just stay sitting and turn my head around. At 9 months I started to
crawl and walked at 10 months. Never really did bother with the whole
rolling thing. In contrast my very sick baby sister rolled consistently
at 3 weeks just days after having two cardiac cath's.

Lucy never really rolled. Here and there she would but never
consistently and never with real purpose and almost never from back to
front. She just up and crawled at 5 1/2 months and was pushing herself
into a sitting position at about the same time and now at 7 1/2 is
pulling to stand on everything, doing stairs :-o ( thanks to her older
sibs who taught her how to go up-now where are those gates???? ) and
pulling up and cruising furniture but only weighs in at a whopping 16.5
lbs.

My first rolled over (both ways) at 3 months; the second didn't roll
over until 6 months. He generally was behind his sister by about 3-4
months (first tooth, walking, etc.) but he always got there within the
normal timeframe.

and the problem is?

seriously, rolling over seems to be one of those things that varies wildly,
and may be something they only do once for a long time, so she sounds
entirely normal to me, she'll probably get the hang of sitting completely in
the next 2-4 weeks, but she may never bother rolling, she might not see the
point!

I think she is in real nappies? some of them can be quite bulky and it can
mean differences in this kind of development, for example, one of ours
rolled quite early because he was so small and the nappy so big, he just
flipped over at the slightest movement!

Cheers

Anne

Micah rolled over *after* another kid in our playgroup who's 3 months
younger -- and after Anne's comment, looking back, I think it could
have been partly due to his cloth diapers. They were so bulky that I
think it made it difficult for him to flip his enormous butt!! In
any case, I just checked the baby book and he rolled over once at 5 1/2
months while he was having a conniption fit in his crib, and then
didn't roll over again during the day, purposefully, until he was into
his 6th month.

my daughter never rolled, never crawled. she stayed where i put her
until she was about 14 months old, then she stood up and walked away.
it was shocking!
the doctor asked at each check up till she was about 9 or 10 months
old, then he stopped asking. he wasn't concerned and neither was i.

Matt didn't roll over until he was 6 months old. Everyone else in the
playgroup had done it months before him but he just didn't seem interested.
He also crawled late (started to leopard crawl around 10 months, hands and
knees around 12 months) and is walking late - at almost 19 months he only
ever takes a few steps then goes back to crawling. For whatever reason, his
gross motor development is slow but still within the "normal" range.

On the other hand, his fine motor skills are through the roof. He can
manipulate small objects with great skill, put blocks into appropriate
holes, etc. He was a pretty good sitter, too, and could hold his head well
at an early age.

Different kids have different strengths. All of the kids in Matt's playgroup
excel at something. He's got the great fine motor skills, while others are
physically strong with good gross motor skills but couldn't put a block in a
hole if you paid them (or whatever you do with 1 and 1/2 year olds! LOL).

I know it's hard not to worry. I know I want Matt to walk NOW but figure
that he won't still be crawling by the time he turns 21! And going by the
stories of everyone who answered, they will both get there in the end, on
their own terms
