Childbirth class and Lots of Objects
It's my 34th birthday, and we spent it at the first session of my
childbirth prep class. It's loosely Lamaze-based, with a lot of general stuff that the teacher throws in. She's had six kids, under a variety of different circumstances and including a set of twins, and she's a doula with more than 500 births in her past, so she's seen a lot of variation. I liked the class. Four couples; I'm the furthest along of us, at 32 weeks. Nice relaxed funny people, who all seem to know slightly different things about pregnancy and childbirth; a lot of the time was discussion. The teacher is fairly science-oriented; she says that when she trained to be a doula she needed to learn how to talk to people well. The physiology was easy for her. So we get a lot of the 'what and why' answered, which I like. We also went out last night to the Babies R Us nearby and bought huge amounts of gear. Not our crib -- we're still debating what kind we want -- but a changing pad with covers and a diaper pail and a bouncer seat and a Baby Bjorn and a whole lot of infant pharmaceuticals and wipes and stuff like that. It was kind of fun, though we were both exhausted at the end of the trip. I like the stuff we got. This weekend, we shift around the furniture to set the apartment up the way we want it. We don't intend to have an actual "baby's room" yet, since I'd like to be able to hear her at night, but we're turning the bedroom into a sleeping place for the whole family, and the second bedroom, which is currently empty, into a sort of dayroom, with my computer desk and the rocking chair and the TV and the daytime cradle and the toys and a functioning changing table in there. I think it will work well. All is well for now, except that I caught a cold. I don't like having a cold in my 33rd week; I'm uncomfortable enough without one!! But it's not too bad and will go away soon. We'll go out to celebrate my birthday after I'm well enough to want to go much of anywhere for fun except to sleep. Naomi EDD March 6, 2004 |
