Review: The Lake House (*** 1/2)
THE LAKE HOUSE
A film review by Steve Rhodes Copyright 2006 Steve Rhodes RATING (0 TO ****): *** 1/2 THE LAKE HOUSE, something like a blend perhaps of SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE with SLIDING DOORS, is a 4-D film. Two people meet and fall in love in the same place but separated by two years in time. It's a romantic comedy that's heavy on the romance, as Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock with marvelous chemistry together play would-be lovers Alex Wyler and Dr. Kate Forster. As it starts, the two characters don't realize that they are communicating across time. Kate, a workaholic physician at a big Chicago hospital, leaves a note to the new owner of her lake house, asking him to forward any mail that the post office might miss sending on to her. The fascinating house is a central character in the picture. Designed and built by famous architect Louis Wyler (Christopher Plummer), Alex's estranged father, the ultramodern house features all glass walls and is built on stilts over the lake. One thing leads to another, and Alex, an architect turned construction worker, starts writing to Kate who starts responding to him. The intelligent and delightful script has them reading their letters to each other as if they were in the same place and time speaking to each other. And director Alejandro Agresti films these scenes with them both together, although they are meant to be in different timeframes. This combination makes what could have been a sterile production really come alive. Unless your heart has a large blockage, you will undoubtedly be moved and touched by their poignant and bittersweet love affair. Eventually, the two of them realize that the other one is not making a mistake in writing the year, with Kate in 2006 and Alex on the same date but in 2004. Although they are both seeing other people in their respective timeframes, neither of them are really infatuated with their love lifes in the present. It is the time traveling love affair that grips them. At first they are no more than curious pen pals, but, in no time, their love blossoms, even if neither admits it at first. It is in the last act that the movie transforms from good movie to a great one. As you might guess, the changes begin when they finally get the guts to attempt a meeting in 2006. After all, it is simple. All they have to do is to pick a date and time in 2006, and, voilą, they can be together. Of course, the film is smart enough not to let it be that easy. The complications that ensue after that are engrossing, and the spectacular ending is completely sublime. This charming film is one worth savoring again and again. THE LAKE HOUSE runs a fast 1:37. It is rated PG for "some language and a disturbing image" and would be acceptable for all ages. The film opens nationwide in the United States on Friday, June 16, 2006. In the Silicon Valley, it will be showing at the AMC theaters, the Century theaters and the Camera Cinemas.
