Default took Max grocery shopping today...

....and got stared at A LOT. I had him in the sling, since I didn't see
any other way to do the kind of shopping I needed to do (needed to pick
up some large items, like cat litter, bottles of water, frozen stuff,
and wipes in bulk, so taking the stroller in would have been a bad
idea). He didn't seem to mind it too much, which was good (he told me a
story the whole time), and my back actually handled it very well, which
was also good. Everyone stared at me, though. Not stared in a bad way,
but stared as in "oh my, I've never seen anything like *that* before!"
I guess slings aren't that popular here. ;-) I should know, actually.
I've never seen anyone use one. I always see people go into stores
lugging their babies around in carriers, and then they put them, carrier
and all, in the shopping carts. One wonders how they have any room for
any groceries once the poor kiddo is in there.

I didn't know what to do, though. I am not used to being stared at by
so many people. ;-) I tried to smile at some of them, but it just felt
so *weird*. I really tried hard to behave like I would normally, so
that people would think that walking around with a kid in a sling was no
big deal.

If they're not used to seeing babies in slings, they probably wonder how
on earth the baby could possibly be comfortable in it. I know I used to
wonder that.

I did the same yesterday! Michael was a complete ANGEL in it! He is too
big for his carrier, but doesn't tolerate the seat in the cart yet, so I
carried him in his sling for an hour, got lots of looks, too!
Only problem, my lower back hurts SO bad today I can hardly walk! I did a
lot of heavy lifting yesterday, so that might be it. I sure hope it wasn't
the sling!
Cheers,

Oh the infant seats. I didn't see them. The store does have a few, but
I rarely ever see them, for some reason.

That happened to me the first time I spent any real time wearing the
sling. I discovered that I can help matters a bit by making sure that
the sling is on properly, and by maintaining good posture as much as
possible. Also, try to lift with the legs, blah blah I'm sure you know
the story. ;-)

That's what I did! I have only ever 1 other person with her baby in a
sling. I didn't discover them till DD was about 6 months or more, so I got
heaps of comments, as by then she was smiling at everyone - from adult
height, not from down at ground level. I'm looking forward to having a baby
in a sling - must work out how to get the baby in there though!

Get used to it - people definitely notice the sling! Though with or
without a sling, people always look at babies. It's nice when I'm in
a social mood, but not as nice when I want to be left alone, lol.

I do sometimes feel like a walking advertisement for mayawrap, since I
get asked about mine constantly! I find it amusing that people think
it's this newfangled gadget, when it's really one of the oldest
child-raising gadgets around. ;-)
