Combination vaccines safe for children

SHOTS DO NOT OVERWHELM IMMUNE SYSTEM, STUDY SAYS

Mercury News Wire Services

Contrary to some fears, childhood combination vaccines, such as the
measles, mumps and rubella shot, do not appear to overwhelm the immune
system and make youngsters prone to other infections, according to the
largest study yet to examine the issue.

A 10-year Danish study found no increased risk for other infectious
diseases among 805,206 children who received the standard set of
childhood vaccinations.

Many parents have felt uneasy about vaccine safety since 2002, when the
federal Institute of Medicine concluded that ``multiple antigen''
vaccines could theoretically over-stimulate the body's immune system,
leaving it more -- not less -- vulnerable to disease.

The new study found no increased rate of pneumonia, diarrhea, blood
infections and viral or bacterial infections of the nervous system.

The findings, published in today's issue of the Journal of the American
Medical Association (http://jama.ama-assn.org), should be reassuring to
parents, the researchers said.

``There has been a lot of speculation about this hypothesis -- that if
you have a lot of these vaccinations, this could perhaps overwhelm or
weaken the child's immune system,'' said Anders Hviid of the Statens
Serum Institute in Copenhagen. ``We found no support for that hypothesis.''

Another controversy that surrounds childhood vaccinations focuses on a
mercury-containing preservative, called thimerosal, that had been used
in some vaccines. Some researchers and parents suspect it may increase
the risk for autism, but a number of public-health organizations have
examined the issue and found no link between vaccines and an increased
risk for autism.

Organized medicine? The study was done in Denmark. The report was
published here in the United States, after peer review. You cannot
handle anything that refutes what you think. I posted on this years ago,
when the article said that a kid can handle 10,000 antigens. There wil
be a safe and effective 5in1 shot soon, thus helping to decease the
incidence of one of the more common problems associated with
vaccinations, i.e., site reactions. That, plus the baby does not have to
have as many uncomfortable needles is A GOOD THING.

Every newborn, from their first breath, has their immune system coping
with new antigens.

More good information:

PEDIATRICS Vol. 109 No. 1 January 2002, pp. 124-129

"Do Vaccines Increase the Risk of Other Infections?

Vaccines may cause temporary suppression of delayed-type
hypersensitivity skin reactions or alter certain lymphocyte function
tests in vitro.51–57 However, the short-lived immunosuppression caused
by certain vaccines does not result in an increased risk of infections
with other pathogens soon after vaccination. Vaccinated children are not
at greater risk of subsequent infections with other pathogens than
unvaccinated children.58–60 On the contrary, in Germany, a study of 496
vaccinated and unvaccinated children found that children who received
immunizations against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, Hib, and polio
within the first 3 months of life had fewer infections with
vaccine-related and -unrelated pathogens than the nonvaccinated group.61

Bacterial and viral infections, on the other hand, often predispose
children and adults to severe, invasive infections with other pathogens.
For example, patients with pneumococcal pneumonia are more likely to
have had a recent influenza infection than matched controls. Similarly,
varicella infection increases susceptibility to group A ß-hemolytic
streptococcal infections such as necrotizing fasciitis, toxic shock
syndrome, and bacteremia.63"

SUMMARY

"Current studies do not support the hypothesis that multiple vaccines
overwhelm, weaken, or "use up" the immune system. On the contrary, young
infants have an enormous capacity to respond to multiple vaccines, as
well as to the many other challenges present in the environment. By
providing protection against a number of bacterial and viral pathogens,
vaccines prevent the "weakening" of the immune system and consequent
secondary bacterial infections occasionally caused by natural infection."

Though the MMR-autism question might
***appear to be resolved,***

science is always a work in progress; a conclusion is only as good as the
methods of the analysis. The epidemiological studies, traditional public
health
tools used to examine the risk factors for a disease on a population level,
were at a disadvantage here because there is little variation in exposure to
MMR since children in most developed countries are vaccinated similarly.

***Furthermore, the difficulties in diagnosing and determining the exact
onset
of autism in children make it difficult to design appropriate studies and
compare the results from those studies.***

The committee acknowledges they could

**not rule out another possibility***--that MMR vaccine could contribute to
ASD
in a small number of children--

***because existing epidemiological tools may not have enough precision to
detect the occurrence of rare effects like ASD.***

"Attention should be given to how the material is perceived and used by
those
with the right and desire to know--

***the parents of children about to be immunized or those who believe their
child has been adversely affected," the committee says. "Direct input from
parents and other stakeholders would be invaluable in conducting a
systematic
and effective evaluation of current communication tools."***
