It's possible, yes, all they have to look for is extracellular Y chromosomal
DNA (absent = female). But I thought that a previous pregnancy with a male
baby would cause false male results for a period of time ... since the fetal
DNA is not cleared very quickly.

I had this test done in Meg's pregnancy in a non commercial research lab,
and it was accurate.

you definitely get fetal blood cells in maternal blood, around 1 in 10,000 I
think, you can find the foetal cells because their DNA has longer strands,
find the foetal cells, get the DNA and you can tell what sex the baby is. I
used to be involved in research in this area, from the computer science side
of things, automaticing the process etc. ultimately you should be able to
get from a blood test what you now need an amnio or CVS to do, but right now
it's very expensive because it takes a lot of time to isolate the foetal
cells.

It won't be good for me then as my last 3 babies were boys. My last was born
2003. I wonder how long it takes to be clear?

I am quite surprised... I expected it to be a scam!

LOL, when I clicked on the link I also expected some kind of scam, but when

Maybe I'm missing something, but why go through all that to find out the
gender? You have to wait a bit, but you can tell on the u/s by 15 weeks or
so.

It's not much to go through... it's just a pin-prick. Here we don't find
out until 18-20 weeks and only at the discrection of the sonographer. I am
all for finding out... and the sooner the better.

Yeah but this place talks about how important it is to find out early,
"Early knowledge of the fetal sex is critical to your family to properly
plan for the immediate need of the coming baby." And later they say, " This
simple test requires only three drops (50 microliters per drop) of your
maternal blood after five weeks of pregnancy to conclude a very accurate
(99.9%) sex determination for the fetus."

Early knowledge of gender is critical? Uh, I don't think so. Maybe I'm
cynical, but the only reason I can think that anyone would NEED to find out
the gender of their baby at 5 weeks, rather than wait until the 20 week u/s
or birth, would be to terminate the pregnancy if it wasn't the gender they
wanted.

That's what I was thinking. I'm impatient, but I can hold out till my 18
week u/s to know the gender.
Just wondering, if terminating if it's the "wrong" gender is not the case,
then what is the rush?
Note: I am pro-choice.
