Smack on the head and ear pulling, along with "Biaso!" was the norm in
my 1970s school years.

I saw a film that was made in 1976 and in it teachers were able to fully
hit HS kids with no consequences. Was this Hollywood, or could
teachers
actually hit kids in these days?

Yes. One school I went to in Texas had special paddles made.

I went to school in Texas and they had paddles, too. We shared a track
with
either a high school or junior high or both, I can't remember. I do
remember a kid from on of those schools being paddled on the field,
though.

I was teaching then, and yes the kids could be paddled. Mostly at our
school the assistant principal did it with a wooden paddle, and a
teacher that referred a kid in a way that resulted in a paddling had
to watch - at least in one school. I also taught with a guy (a black
guy who was a lay preacher), and he often smacked the children on
their hands with a ruler and he also taped their mouths shut if they
wouldn't be quiet. This was 7th grade in the mid 70s.

I was never paddled myself in school, and I don't think any of my kids
were paddled though, and neither do I remember it being done on the
field.

I was thrown against the chalkboard by my hair. But I think Catholic schools
could still whack people around after other places could not.

I see. In the film the PE teacher outright smacked the smart alek type
girls. In my home state its illegal to spank kids.

Whether or not teachers or education administrators can legally hit
children is left to the states. In some states that had legally banned
hitting of children by school personnel, there is a move to reinsitute
the practice.

Of course, parents are free to hit children in every state.

Except Oregon where spanking is banned. California will soon ban
spanking as well. This is bad news, but a reality of the times.

It is pretty bad news that we actually have to make laws to protect small
people from getting hit by big people who are supposed to love and care for
them.

I was in elementary school when VA banned corporal punishment, so it must
have been late 1970s or really early 1980s. Before that, I remember that
some of the teachers had paddles on their wall, but I don't recall them
being used.

Corporal punishment is still legal in TN, but most schools and districts
have banned it or strongly restricted it.

The alternatives to making laws that protect small children is having
adults who understand that hitting children is wrong.

It would be better because little children wouldn't get hit.

They tried that in Sweden. Do you want to know what Swedish parents do
instead? How about nothing? How about yelling?

"Arriving in Sweden in 1981, I was shocked by the general lack of concern
about children's behavior. I observed youngsters acting in ways that
clearly warranted parental intervention; yet, even parents who were not
enamored of permissive childrearing claimed that if they could not
physically punish their children, they did not know what to do instead, so
they did nothing. I questioned the need for an antispanking law in a society
that was not inclined to discipline its children."

Nawh, you always need those laws, to identify the monsters as those
who will not be able to restrain themselves.
