Total aside -- it's a little known fact that dental cavities are, in

I vaguely recall reading somewhere that it was better to
become colonized early rather than late, though. *google*
guess not..

And for those who want to pre-chew their babies' food,
xylitol gum (assuming you can find it) helps keep the
bacteria

Starbuck's gum has zylitol in it.

Ooooo! I didn't know that. I'm wondering why antibiotics don't clear
them up, though. I mean, my DH has this problem (I do not). He's
certainly had antibiotics in his lifetime.

They're normal bacteria that colonize the mouth -- just like it's
impossible to get rid of all the bacteria in your gut or on your skin
(and you wouldn't want to), you can't get rid of them. You can,
however, have a higher or lower burden of them. That's why eating
sugar and not brushing your teeth makes a difference -- it allows them
to multiply. That's also why some say that the best way to take care
of young children's dental health is to take care of the parents'
teeth, so they don't have teeming masses of bacteria multiplying in
their cavities and whatnot that then becomes a large burden passed on
to the kid.
