Using spanking to teach discipline

Discipline kids without spanking, DONNA RAYCRAFT, Penacook - Letter

A
pril 30 is National SpankOut USA Day. Its purpose is to bring attention
to the need to end corporal punishment of children.

Just for today, parents and caregivers are asked to think about ways to
discipline children to help them become caring, responsible and
productive adults without the use of corporal punishment.

Discipline is one of the most important gifts a parent can give a
child. The word means to teach and involves giving children instruction
on what is expected of them, how to solve problems and how to be a
productive, fully functioning adult. Children thrive on discipline and
feel safe and secure when consistent limits are set. It teaches
children to have an internal locus of control, or self-discipline.

Corporal punishment, however, does just the opposite. It teaches
children to have an external locus of control, to behave in a certain
way only when the person in power (parent, teacher, police officer,
librarian, Sunday school teacher, coach, etc.) is looking. Children
learn to become sneaky.

Children who are frequently hit often grow up with childhood memories
that are full of anger and resentment. States where corporal punishment
is allowed in schools have higher rates of juvenile delinquency, more
violence in the schools and a higher rate of incarceration of adults.

Children learn best through teaching, discussion and observing adults
who model responsible, caring and self-disciplined behavior.
