I'm sorry about the loss of your friend.

Whenever someone has surgery, there is an opportunity
for bacteria to enter the body. A certain percentage
of people will die from surgery. People with poorer nutrition
will be more likely to die. It's sad but true. Taking
lots of vitamins around the time of the surgery can
improve your chances, but even strong healthy people can
catch an infection during surgery and die. Things
happen and we just have to find some way to accept it.

I feel for you at this difficult time.

I would no more leave my child alone in a hospital room than I would
leave them in a hotel room.

I left my daughter sleeping in a hospital room long enough to
go and eat a meal at the hospital cafeteria. I asked the nurses
to tell her that Mummy would be back soon, if she woke up.
The nurses encouraged me to go and not to worry, but I suspected
they wouldn't hear her from the other room if she did wake
up, and anyway just having strange nurses tell her Mummy would
be back soon might not be all that comforting.
Luckily she slept until after I got back. Ideally I would
have had another family member coming to bring me meals; in
fact my mother did bring me a meal the previous day, so I only
left my daughter that once. My daughter was 2 years old and
was in the hospital for about 24 hours.

I guess I pretty much agree with you.

That's fine if you have other family members around, if your child isn't
in the hospital for more than a couple of days, and if you don't have
other obligations (like other kids) to take care of, too.

When I was in the hospital with my then 6 week old daughter, I was
walking with her to the lounge to watch TV, when a little girl struck up
a conversation with me. When she found out I was staying, she said she
was sad that HER mom couldn't be there, too. But -- she had a chronic
condition that put her in the hospital several times a year for a week
or two at a time, and she was one of four kids, and both of her parents
had to work (in part to afford her medical care).

Not all parents have the luxury of staying.

Better to fight for better medical systems, so family members can count
on decent care, even when they CAN'T be present at all times.
