Default Newborn in front seat of single-cab pickup? Good baby/pet-friendly vehicles?

We have a due date of 11/7 and I am trying to make sure we have proper
transportation for our little girl. Right now, I have a 2000 GMC full-size
single cab pickup and a 1999 Mustang convertible.

My understanding is that newborns should always face backwards and in the
back seat. Is there any problem with putting her backwards in the front
(and only) seat in the pickup and turning off the passenger airbag? (Is the
back-seat rule because of the airbag or some other safety reason?)

Also, has anyone ever transported a baby in a late model 2-door Mustang? I
would really like to keep this car but seems it may be too big a hassle to
get her in and out of it.

Finally, we are considering buying a Honda Element, Toyota Tacoma double-cab
pickup, or possibly a GMC Envoy XUV. I would like something we can carry
both the dogs (2 golden retrievers) and baby in, but want to avoid anything
with carpet because the dogs get everything kinda yucky, even when they're
not actually touching it. Any opinions on these three vehicles or any other
suggestions?

TIA.

I don't have any opinions about the other vehicle choices, but did want to
say that the reason for the backseat locations for carseats is the airbag,
as far as I know. If you've turned off the passenger side airbag, you
should be okay.

It is safer to be in the back seat even without the
airbag, but it is much safer in the front seat without the
airbag than with it. With the airbag is an absolute no-no.
Without the airbag, it's just not quite as good as the back
seat.

It is likely to be a pain crawling back there to
get her in and out, but how much hassle you're willing to
put up with is totally dependent on your personal feelings
on the matter and how much you want to keep the car ;-)

Best wishes,
Ericka

Yes, but in the case of the pickup, there is no back seat, so it's either
use the front seat without the airbag, or sell the car. I can certainly say
that the front seat without an airbag is safer than the bed of the truck!

I'm sure, comparatively speaking, that it WILL be a pain to get the baby out
of a 2-door car, as opposed to a 4 door car, or even a nice mini-van. As
Ericka said, it really depends on how much you love the car. Sometimes we
hold onto things, cars especially, because they represent things to us. You
may well find that once you see and experience how impractical it is, you'll
have no problem getting rid of it. The practicality of the car may outweigh
the symbolism of the car.

It is code in some (most) states to place the baby in the back seat.
If you are taking the baby home from the hospital this way, you may
have to "meet code." The nurses at the hospital in our city accompany
new parents to thier care to make sure the baby is in an approved
car carrier and is strapped in correctly. In your case, they could
prevent you from taking the baby home in the front of the pickup.

When my first daughter was born, all we had was a Toyota pick up. So there
really is no choice of where to put her, so backwards it was. Turn your
airbag off and you should be fine.

We did sell the truck and got a more family friendly car. I have no
suggestions on the Mustang.

We had a two-door car (a Geo Tracker) until DD was a year old, and never
had any problems getting her in and out of it. That may have partly to
do with the fact it was a little higher. The only reason we traded the
car in was because I really, really wanted a car with a trunk (for
transporting all the other baby detritus).

;-) Absolutely. Some people are really picky about
that sort of thing and would rather sell the car; others are
willing to tolerate the slightly increased risk. Same with
things like putting the baby in the outboard seats of the
back seat rather than the center seat, or any number of
other factors that are within the realm of accepted
practice, but perhaps less than optimal.

We had a pick up for a while after the first two kids. They both rode in
the front seat with no air bag, or the air bag disabled. Otherwise they'd
have been on the roof or something

We had a 1998 Mustang. I loved that car. I never, ever got an infant car
seat to fit right in it. Especially once I moved from the carrier car seat
to the convertible car seat. Its because of that car I have 6 different car
seats now, I think.

I think in most states there are exceptions for
vehicles that don't *have* a back seat.

Best wishes,
Ericka
