Default PTA Fundraiser - Need Commitments

My take on it is that it is not spam if I am sharing it with online
friends and acquaintances, regardless of whether or not that happens
to be in 6 different groups or 50, right? Is there a specific number
that constitutes something as definite spam on message boards and not
via bulk e-mail? Seriously, what is the definition? I'm curious now.

The main question is, 'is it spam?'

I get what your saying, but like I said, seeing how we've discussed
fundraisers in the past, many aspects of it, it just seemed to sort of
fit here to me and was most unlike other spamming in multitude as of
late. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe people here have
actually outright asked for fundraising suggestions/alternatives to
the usual. So it would have been fine if she had posted that
information in that thread, but it isn't because she just jumped in
and put it out there.

So - if we ever had a thread about kids' shoes, the Nike spam ads would fit in
here??

Look, it's simple - this isn't a commercial newsgroup. This wasn't to help
anyone - it was someone looking to make money.

Remember when the Supreme Court said it knows pornography when it sees
it, but it can't define it? Spam is sort of like that.

It is less likely to be spam if:

1) It is not cross-posted
2) The message is on-topic
3) The poster is a frequent poster
4) Links on the message don't go to pages with lots of google ads.
5) The message is from Asia according to the IP.

Some things are clearly spam, like the Nike shoe ads, even if they are
in a thread about sneakers (tennis shoes to you midwesterners).

Unfortunately, there is no way to tell for sure if some messages are spam.

Actually, there is a definition that's formalized that has to do with the number
of substantially similar (it used to say 'the same', but of course the spammers
would vary their messages slightly to get around the filters) posts to a certain
number of groups, etc.

But the term has gotten applied to any commercial message, probably incorrectly.
I still think that *any* commercial message, all of them taken in toto, even if
they show up one at a time, has the irritating, depressing effect that old
fasioned spam does. Witness how actual spam was pointed to to try to justify an
individual ad. It affects the whole medium we're trying to use.

Look - this stuff about how individual posters are 'different' or more valid
than mass-propogated spam is a red herring - misc.kids isn't a place for ads,
period. Why can I say that - because there is a charter. Take a look at the
periodic posts at misc.kids.info, which will refer you to the misc.kids
FAQ ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/news.a...ids/faq/part1:

___
* Please do not post advertisements. misc.kids is a non-commercial
newsgroup. Reviews and discussions of commercial products relating to
children are appropriate, although they would be more appropriate
in misc.kids.consumers.

Honestly, I love seeing what other mothers (women with children who
are often inspired by their children or prompted into creativity upon
having them to find ways to spend time with them) have created and
based businesses upon, so that sort of thing doesn't bother me one
wit. I believe I had originally discussed my "thing" with Nikki (sp?)
way back when it hit me to get a patent for it after I had been using
it successfully for a while myself. I probably would have just pinged
her here to share it, as we had discussed prior, so I wanted to know
how that would be treated. lol. I just find it odd that someone would
feel the need to turn someone in for a post on a message board that
actually touches on past subjects, but I can completely see why
someone would turn someone who repeatedly posts on the same boards
over and over and over again. lol. I've really never felt the need to
filter and instead choose which posts I will ignore. If anyone really
wants usenet and is turned off by the spam Â*- can't THEY filter? Why
would it chase them off? The whole "children" scenario, well, it

Thank you for your support, Chris. I was getting quite a complex and
felt like a child being reprimanded. It really did bother me. I am
learning the ropes here and apparently I stepped over a line. I did
try to go through a PTA "thread", but all I could find were postings
from 1997 - 2002, so I posted a new one. I guess this group stuff has
been around a lot longer than I expected. Having children takes you
out of the loop. Anyway, my apologies to all group members.
For the future, I will only have any info in my signature. I know

So, think of it like - - 6 years ago you happen to overhear a couple of fellow
classroom moms talk about using Tide vs. other laundry soap. Because of that,
you're knocking on their doors with your MLM laundry soap because you know
they're interested in laundry soap. How do you think that would be received,
vs. being there for the original conversation, keeping in mind that selling even
then would come off as pushy.

This is just the kind of fishing around for openings for ads that's so
transparent and so irritating.

What is it about some folks with stuff to sell think it's something everyone
*else* wants to hear about? Oh, yeah, it's denoted $$$$$$$$...

Have a little sensitivity for the time and place for stuff like that. Which
isn't every social medium you see. Do you do this IRL, walk up to people in
conversations to push your wares? Prolly not. Ads belong in advertising
mediums, for people who are prospective customers to go to. A lot of us are
trying to live our lives not saturated with commercialism.

Enjoy your day...snow out this way.

It's okay really. There are certain "feels" to certain groups that you
can only get the feel for after lurking (reading only) for differing
lengths of time, and there are people on some boards that need things
worded a certain way, etc. For example, they might try to stereotype
you into a certain group based on one post alone, the way it is
worded, etc. so my best advice is to post things extremely well
thought out in advance, and this is hardly a place to post a random
rant that might make you feel better with any expectation of
understanding in most cases. lol. At any rate, it's generally a nice
group of people who are very helpful here and in many cases appear to
be very knowledgable. Oh, and be sure to break long posts up into
paragraphs or you'll get an eyeful like I did! LMAO. Searching old
posts can turn up differing things each time you do them too, even if
on the same topic, and depending on which one you try to respond to,
you might actually inadvertantly post to a ton of different groups
based on the posting list of the post to which you are replying, etc.

Basically, though, since there are really only the usual group of
people continuing to use these groups, hoping to get the word out on
your accomplishment won't probably go very far here - if only the
Nikie folks would see that and quit using up space. lol. Like I said,
I enjoy seeing posts like yours pop up here and there, and probably
because I have a similar goal in mind in my own life, but obviously, a
lot of others don't. I could see what other groups you've posted to in
usenet too, so either you were just starting to spread your "spamming"
wings or you only picked 2 groups to share it with. lol.

Jeff

Jeff

I see. So it basically CAN be a large gray area then. One person might
look at a nude portrait and consider it art, and another may consider
it porn. I might look at someone sharing something they are excited
about creating that they are promoting through school fundraising
techniques in 2 posts differently than I look at shoe spam that comes
in 14-post attacks at a time -- others not so much.

When I read the "About this group" link on this page, it indicates
nothing other than children, their behavior and their activities
should be shared here, but that isn't what happens either, and it is a
generally well accepted deviation once you are an established poster,
but some might say that there is no business to discussing anything
other than what this board was deemed to discuss either --- ahhh, the
very many shades of gray.

I can completely understand a pet peeve, however, having some myself.
lol.

Thanks for the information Jeff.
