Sensory Problems and Encopresis
I am the mother of a six year old boy that has been soiling his undeware
for almost six months now. We finally went to a GI doctor and she said he has encopresis. She perscribed milk of magnesia to clean him out and then benefiber and another laxative. We returned to see her again this week and she said he is not impacted anymore and believes he is sometimes feels the poop and then pushes it back in, which causes soiling. We even bought a book called Clouds and Clocks which is about a boy who soils. We have explained the digestive system and showed pictures of it to him. We have all sorts of reward systems set up for him. Tonight he had two accidents. He told me that sometimes he doesn't feel it coming out or he doesn't want to stop the game or whatever it is he is doing. I should mention that my son was diagnosed with sensory integration dysfuncion when he was five months old. This caused all sorts of eating problems and food aversions. Well, we finally got over all of our eating issues. Please tell me if I'm wrong, but I think he is now having sensory issues with his pooping. Does anyone else out there have a child with sensory and pooping problems. He saw an OT from 0 to 3. We have an appointment for an evauluation with an OT. I'm hoping that he wil solve his pooping problems. In a nut shell I think Daniel was impacted and had encopresis. I know now that he is getting plenty of fiber and laxatives, so now that question is whether his problem is sensory related. Going to an OT is suppose to help children complete tasks independently. I'm hoping he will be able to teach Daniel to use the potty indpendently without any fears. Help, I'm at my wits end. I would love to hear from you if your child has sensory issues. If the Sensory stuff is causing his problems, then I feel like going to an OT is a step in the right direction. I don't want him going into first grade with this problem. |
