It's July! The school year is just around the corner. How do parents
of kids going into middle school get them ready?

Oh, they are ready. It is the parents that have to get ready. They
pray.

I agree with Vickie, the kids are ready. Seriously though what kinds of
things are you wanting to know? Take a tour of the building so they have an
idea of where to go. They usually have orientations that they can attend
when school was in session. Not much you can do though until they actually
get into the school and figure things out for themselves.

The other thing to do is make sure they're reading a lot over the
summer. And check to see if there is required summer homework if you
don't know already.

Yea, that's good for an academic side of things, which is what the
poster probably was asking.

Socially this is going to be pretty tough.

I suggest sitting down and talking to them about some of the stuff
they might encounter. Peer pressure, especially. I don't think you
need to go into detail, just give them a heads up. Let them know you
are proud of them and trust their judgement, so they should too. If
something seems wrong to them with what the gang might be up to, then
tell them it is better to go with their instincts then over the bridge
with the rest of the gang.

Morals/principles/values - this is the time to reinforce them, in my
opinion. :-)

Make sure they get enough sleep. Kids this age can stay up half the night
then sleep 'til past noon.

I have written a book about this topic. It's called Managing Middle
School Madness - Helping Parents and Teachers Understand the Wonder
Years(Available on Amazon.com) I have been looking around for
different parent ideas. I'll add my own every day, starting with the
first chapter. The book is just a collection of tip that I am more
than willing to share to get some discussion!

Chapter 1 - Dealing with the School
Tip # 1 - Above all, see yourself in a partnership with the school.
The following poem does a great job demonstrating the importance of
unity in the parent/school relationship:
Unity
By Ray A. Lingenfelter
I dreamed I stood in a studio
And watched two sculptors there.
The clay they used was a young child's mind
And they fashioned it with care.

One was a teacher -- the tools he used
Were books, music, and art.
The other, a parent, worked with a guiding hand,
And a gentle, loving heart.
Day after day, the teacher toiled with touch
That was careful, deft, and sure.
While the parent labored by his side
And polished and smoothed it o'er.

And when, at last, their task was done,
They were proud of what they had wrought.
For the things they had molded into the child
Could neither be sold or bought.

And each agreed they would have failed
If each had worked alone.
For behind the parent stood the school
And behind the teacher, the home.

Chapter 2 - Dealing with the Teacher
Chapter 3 - Dealing with other kids
Chapter 4 - What the Parent Can Do
Chapter 5 - Parents Helping Parents
Chapter 6 - Suicide and Other Tough Stuff
Chapter 7 - Once school starts...
Chapter 8 - Improving study skills
Chapter 9 - If your child starts to misbehave
Chapter 10 - Zap 19
