Not that Randall Neustaedter is an unbiased observer or anything. Nor
is he a particularly accurate reporter.

One answer came in a careful study of illness patterns observed in
babies before and after vaccination. If vaccines cause a weakened immune
system, then we would expect to see a higher incidence of illness following
vaccination. In that study the incidence of acute illnesses in the 30 day
period following DTP vaccine was compared to the incidence in the same
children for the 30 day period prior to vaccine. The three-day period
immediately following vaccine was excluded because children frequently
develop fever as a direct response to vaccine toxins. A total of 82 healthy
infants received DTP, and their symptoms were reported by parents and
observed by a pediatrician at weekly intervals. Those babies experienced a
dramatic increase in fever, diarrhea, and cough in the month following DTP
vaccine compared to their health before the shot (Jaber et al., 1988).

But this was the only such study I could find. A concern, but
inconclusive. Also, it fails to reveal whether it's the D, the T, the
P, or some combination. And if it's the P, we don't use that one any
more.

Could vaccines be weakening the immune system of our populations and
causing asthma and allergies at unprecedented levels? A recent study
suggests the answer is yes. A team of New Zealand researchers, found a
greater rate of asthma and allergy episodes among immunized children. Of
1,265 children born in 1977, the 23 who did not receive the
diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus shot had no recorded asthma or allergy
problems before age 10. Of the children who were vaccinated, 23.1 percent
had asthma episodes, and 30 percent had consultations for other allergic
illnesses (Kemp, et al., 1997).

This study addressed whether whole cell pertussis-vaccinated
children have a different risk of atopic disorders compared with
children who did not receive this vaccination. Data on vaccination
status, atopic disorders and child and family characteristics of
the children of 700 families were collected in this retrospective
study. A minority of these 700 families refused vaccinations for
religious reasons. The relation between pertussis-vaccination
status and atopic disorders was analysed by means of adjusted
logistic regression for repeated measurements in order to account
for the correlation between sibship members. The 700 families
included 1,961 children. Data on vaccination status and atopic
disorders were available for 1,724 children. Vaccinated children
had a reduced risk of atopic disorders. Whole cell pertussis
vaccination is associated with a lower risk of atopic disorders,
though other vaccine components (diphtheria, tetanus,
poliomyelitis) or other vaccinations may also be involved.

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively assess sensitization rates and the
development of allergic diseases in a follow-up of a randomized
controlled pertussis vaccine trial. SETTING: Two-month-old infants
were the subject of this double-blind study in 1992 in a
collaboration between the Pediatric Clinic and the Primary Care
Centers in Linkoping. PATIENTS AND INTERVENTION: Allergic diseases
were evaluated in 667 children, who were randomized to 1 of 4
vaccine groups: a 2-component, a 5-component, or a whole cell
pertussis vaccine (all of which were administered with the
diphtheria and tetanus toxoids vaccine) and the diphtheria and
tetanus toxoids vaccine alone. Allergy development was assessed by
questionnaires (n = 667) and skin prick tests (n = 538) at the age
of 7 years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Allergic diseases and skin
prick test results at the age of 7 years. RESULTS: The cumulative
incidence of allergic diseases was 34.9%, and was similar in the 4
groups (33.3%-37.3%, P =.89), even after adjusting for family
history, sex, pets, dampness, environmental smoking at home, and
other living conditions. Positive skin prick test results were
more prevalent, however, after vaccination with the 2-component
acellular vaccine (19.4%) than in the other 3 groups (11.1%-13.5%,
adjusted for confounding factors, P =.01). Furthermore, allergic
rhinoconjunctivitis was more common in children who were initially
immunized with the 2-component pertussis vaccine and received a
booster dose with an acellular vaccine compared with those who
received no booster vaccination (relative risk, 3.6; 95%
confidence interval, 1.1-12.0). CONCLUSION: Pertussis vaccination
in infancy with any of these vaccines was not associated with
allergic manifestations at the age of 7 years, apart from a higher
prevalence of positive skin prick test results after an
experimental 2-component vaccine, which is no longer in use.

polio; pertussis and tetanus; or measles, mumps, and rubella on
the incidence of physician-diagnosed asthma and eczema. METHODS:
We used a previously established birth cohort in the West Midlands
General Practice research database. RESULTS: We found an
association between vaccination and the development of allergic
disease; however, this association was present only among children
with the fewest physician visits and can be explained by this
factor. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that currently recommended
routine vaccinations are not a risk factor for asthma or eczema.

does it matter, it wasn't vaccination. Most of the vaccine disease
declined by 90% before vaccination,a nd would have continued to decline
with or without vax, in fact smallpox would have died out sooner, as vax
spread it

If vaccine disease decreased by 90% before vaccination, why did almost
every American kid get measles and chicken-pox before vaccination? Did
they get the illnesses many years ago ten times?

What was the ratio JUST BEFORE there was a vaccine?, not historically.

Measles had been holding pretty steady at about 400,000 reported cases
per year in the years before the vaccine was introduced.
