13 y.o. girl - bday party ideas?
Yes, this is kinda last minute, but due to nutty schedules the date
creeped up on us while we weren't looking. :-) DD's 13th bday is in a week. Looked at the calendar and realized that next Saturday night is the best & only date to have a bday party for her. So I need to throw something together fast. I did already order a cake, and we've all been buying presents over the last month or two. What DD wants is an ear-piercing party at the mall (only her closest friends invited for this part, primarily due to the fact we only have one car and can only transport two extra kids), and then a slumber party with a larger gang of friends (estimate: 10 total girls). Sounds doable, except she's also trying to brainstorm party games & activities and we're getting stumped, other than the usual "pizza, cake, movie, mom-nagging-everyone to PLEASE settle down and go to sleep now!" The only idea I have so far is maybe to go to the craft store, get a bunch of jewelry-making stuff, and have the girls make their own earrings & necklaces. Seems to keep with her theme too! Probably could easily do a "makeover" type theme where the girls could do their nails and makeup etc. (Her crowd is big into clothes & fashion and practicing with the makeup right now - none of them are allowed to wear makeup out of the house yet, however). Please help me brainstorm other party ideas! DD has turned into a total girly-girl this past year, if that helps. Her ideal was to do a mall shopping trip with 10 girls, but I squashed that idea because no way am I going to be responsible for that many girls wreaking mischief in the mall. :-( Also, trying to figure out where to put all these girls for sleeping purposes. Our house is small, with small rooms that have heavy furniture that's hard to move around to make floor space. And it has hard-wood floors which I imagine wouldn't be all that comfortable to sleep on in a sleeping bag. The ideal is to have them all together in one room, but the way our house is, all the rooms are small. The most we've ever had is 4 girls sleeping in the 10x10 den (two on the futon and two on the floor). That usually works good for routine sleepovers, but for a gang this size, it won't. My DD's original suggestion was to have the girls split up into the two girl's bedrooms (sending younger sister off for the night for her own sleepover). That might accomodate 10 girls (5 in each room) and it would keep the girls all on one floor, and keep the noise levels down, as their suite of rooms is away from the rest of the house (and farther away from the neigbor's condo unit!). Anyone ever do this? Split kids up into separate rooms for slumber parties? Does it work? Or will it encourage squabbles of who sleeps where, and encourage kids going back and forth between rooms and never settling down? Or should I squash the sleepover part and just send them all home around 11 pm or something? :-) Help! jen |

With 10 girls, you'll probably end up with some that fall asleep by 10pm, and some that stay up all night. When I was in a similar situation, they all started off the in the play room, but I suggested that any who wanted to go to sleep before the main group could go to my daughter's room. I don't think that officially splitting them up is a good idea. But if they can all fit into your 13YO's room while they're up, and have your other daughter's room as the "quiet room" for sleeping only, then I think it could work out. Good luck. Bizby |

For my son's 13th birthday we went to Washington D.C. for a long weekend. After a night with 10 thirteen year old girls to entertain, they'd have to cary me away to the funny farm ha ha... OK, I'm no help.. Good luck! Cheers (truly), Banty |

13 y.o. girl - bday party ideas?
Banty wrote: Oh, you hafta have a gang... Yes, she wants a gang. The only time she's ever had a bday party that big was in Kindergarten! So we're going for it this year. And if I host outside the house (like a bowling or ice skating party), I'm afraid it'll get too expensive. Want to keep costs down. For my son's 13th birthday we went to Washington D.C. for a long weekend. After a night with 10 thirteen year old girls to entertain, they'd have to cary me away to the funny farm ha ha... Yep I'm dreading it but we'll get through it somehow. After some brainstorming today we've decided the theme will be "Glamour Girl" and we'll have stations for doing nails, make-up, hair. (DD11 is now allowed to stay for the party, since she's really good at manicures - I get to do make-up). We're asking all the girls to bring their most glamourous outfit. Then we'll take "glamour" photo shots with the digital camera using balloons as a backdrop. Plus a photo of each guest with the bday girl. For goodie bag I'll get some nail polish and single-size face masks and beauty stuff like that. Then for thank you notes, we'll send the photos we took once they get back from being developed. I'm hoping I can talk my girlfriend into doing the hair station. I'm a klutz with hair. jen |
