annoyances near the one year mark
So, I'm approaching my one-year mark with my second nursling (!!!) and
while I am of course thrilled to have a healthy baby (almost toddler!) with a healthy appetite and love of mama's milk, and I am thrilled to be able to provide her with breastmilk as a source of nutrition and comfort, I also really want to whine about a couple of things (and perhaps elicit vague murmurings of support from the peanut gallery). Ok, so, first of all, I *still* experience strong and painful letdowns at random times, occasionally resulting in a damp bra or shirt. This stopped at about 4 mos with my first so I am not sure quite why it is still happening now, but it is, and I hate it. Secondly, sometimes in the middle of the night, I leak quite a bit, and wake up with wet breasts and a wet sheet. This is annoying. My baby hasn't nursed at night at all since she was teeny teeny tiny (she practically came out night-weaned!), so what the hell? Last, I have a recurring blister on the anterior surface of my right nipple. It becomes a fluid-filled blister like you might get on your foot from tight shoes, and then after lancing it develops a serous crust which eventually sloughs. It gets sore and bothers me. So, that's my gripe about nursing at almost-a-year out. Sigh. -- hillary israeli vmd http://www.hillary.net "uber vaccae in quattuor partes divisum est." not-so-newly minted veterinarian-at-large |

Murmurmurmurmurmur. :-) Ok, so, first of all, I *still* experience strong and painful letdowns at random times, occasionally resulting in a damp bra or shirt. This stopped at about 4 mos with my first so I am not sure quite why it is still happening now, but it is, and I hate it. Because letdown typically is faster and easier with subsequent babies than it is with the first? Secondly, sometimes in the middle of the night, I leak quite a bit, and wake up with wet breasts and a wet sheet. This is annoying. My baby hasn't nursed at night at all since she was teeny teeny tiny (she practically came out night-weaned!), so what the hell? Dunno, but you know I leaked until DS was nearly two. He *did* nurse at night, though usually not more than once, and the wet bedding stopped by probably a year or so. I don't really remember when I stopped having to wear double pads at night. Last, I have a recurring blister on the anterior surface of my right nipple. It becomes a fluid-filled blister like you might get on your foot from tight shoes, and then after lancing it develops a serous crust which eventually sloughs. It gets sore and bothers me. Ick. I don't suppose it helps to reposition her? So, that's my gripe about nursing at almost-a-year out. Sigh. Murmurmurmur. Do you think she'll wean later than J did? Holly Mom to Camden, 2.5 yrs |

I don't suppose it helps to reposition her? Nope. It only happens on the one side - which coincidentally is the same side that had the awful ulceration when J was an infant, and which has some scarring in the area which is prone to blistering. It's probably related to that. *So, that's my gripe about nursing at almost-a-year out. Sigh. * *Murmurmurmur. Do you think she'll wean later than J did? Yes. I do think that. At this point (3 weeks before first birthday!!), J was nursing only 2x/24 hrs. N is nursing oh, let's see: 6 am - wake up, nurse in bed off and on for a while 7 am - breakfast 9 am - J goes to school - N nurses either before or after dropping J off 11ish - naptime - usually nurses beforehand 1 pm - lunchtime - usually nurses after waking up, then eats lunch 3 pm - nurses and then naps 5 pm - dinner and then nurse 7 pm nurse a long time 8:30 short nurse and to bed so, um, a lot. -- hillary israeli vmd http://www.hillary.net "uber vaccae in quattuor partes divisum est." not-so-newly minted veterinarian-at-large |
