It isn't the toys in the office that makes a "pedodontist" good. They
have
to be board certified to put that shingle outside. Board certification
means that they learn more about "tooth development" from the get go, know
when to have you seek help and know how to work around kids. I've seen
dentists hold kids down (not pedodontists), I've seen a whole lot of bad
things that dentists have done to kids and certainly not taken the time to
work with the parents either. Kathleen and Chris will go to a pedo guy
until they are well past their teens.

My kids go to a pediatric dentist. I don't like him very well, but the kids
love him. We do have to have V sedated because of her oral aversion, but
that's getting better. She allows us to brush and floss her teeth fully, and
has been doing so for months - I expect her to need sedation one more time,
and maybe not at all after that.

This yahoo told me I needed to wean my daughter (then age 2 1/2) because the
milk would give her cavities. I note he didn't tell me to quit feeding her
cow's milk or juice....just breastmilk. True, she had cavities, but there
have been no more since we really got serious about the brushing and
flossing. I think he just thought extended breastfeeding was ooky. He based
his recommendation on a study that involved fewer than 20 children. After
that, I just didn't tell him she nursed anymore. We brushed better, end of
problem.

But the kids do love going in. They talk about the dentist for weeks and
sometimes months after, and ask when they get to go again.

Sorry to hear about your dislike and his belief. I do remember our
pediatrician telling us something similar but I just made sure we brushed
really, really well. Luckily the kids have never had a cavity but we are
religious about brushing here - even for adults, there is brushing,
flossing, tongue brushing and rinsing with listerine diluted. Together it
works well. Good that the kids like the doctor. That is important.
