solids texture, feeding process etc.. (long)
ted wrote in message m... My dd is 6 months old now. I've been feeding her solids every day, once a day for about a month. Lately she learnt to squirt and spit at me. She almost does a raspberry with food in the mouth. I initially thought she's telling me to stop feeding her. But she's doing this even while not eating. Just playing around. She's not even teething. I felt her gums and nothing. DH thought this is soooo cool so he shot a ten minute video of her raspberrying (?). I think it's cool too except while trying to feed her solids. Aren't they wonderful when they do this? You end up wearing lots of food - and it is amazing just where it ends up on the baby! DD (8 months) was raspberrying a lot when younger. With her, it was because she was full. I was giving her both breasts, then trying to give her solids. So I gave her one side, then solids. That was heaps better, but it didn't solve the problem totally. Now she will tend to raspberry the first few mouthfuls, so I make sure they are just a wee bit on the end of the spoon - I end up wearing less that way. I also make sure I have one end of her bib in my hand, so I can pull it up to shield myself! After a few spoons like this, she will generally eat just fine. But I have found she also raspberries if there is texture - the other day she had a stringy bit of pumpkin, and that was her way of getting it out of her mouth. I try and give her regular sips of water too, with food, as she seems to hate food coating her tongue, and will raspberry if there is a coating. Also, for a few days, the only way I could get her to eat was if she held the spoon - I guided it so it got in her mouth, not at it! You could also try using 2 spoons - one for her, and one for you. As for texture, whatever she will eat! My DD is still pretty much on mush. I am trying to introduce thicker purees, and add a bit of mashed stuff. Some days she will take, some days she won't. Good luck, and in the meantime don't wear your best clothes while feeding her! Cathy |

I think it depends on the child.
DD is 6 1/2 months old and she started eating solids at 6 months and I don't give her solids every single day (although I try) but just on Tuesday I found out that she absolutely loved mashed potatoes with nothing in it....no bm and no water...just the cooked potatoe mashed...well mashed I mean but it is still much lumpier than the smooth rice cereal with bm I was giving her which she didn't open her mouth for as wide as she does with the potatoes...... I guess the key is trying to see what *she* likes FayeC "ted" wrote in message m... My dd is 6 months old now. I've been feeding her solids every day, once a day for about a month. All that was side bar (actually if you read my questions, you'll understand the context) My actual questions a What should be the consitency of solids at this age for a toothless baby? Should it be runny so that it doesn't stay on top of your finger? Or can it be less runny so that you can pick a bit with your finger? I'll make it perfectly smooth. No chunks or anything. Until a week ago, I only fed her with a spoon. Since she started this raspberry thing, I tried to feed her with my finger. She eats if I feed her with my finger whether she's hungry or not. If I try with spoon, she'll immediately go into the playful mood and tries to grab the spoon, spits it out.. you name it! Should I just stick to the spoon and not offer to feed with finger? Will this finger thing become like the nipple confusion wherein she won't eat with spoon, only with finger feeding? Thanks as always. |
