Tine, Ditmar You can buy Fenugreek at any Indian Store. You can also buy it online. It is sold online in United States for breast enahncement. In reality, it does work to increase milk production if u are nursing ur child That I'm perfectly aware of :-) After all I've been reading this news group since my daughter (now 14) was 1 - LOL In Denmark no-one knows the use of fenugreek for that - isn't it strange? Fenugreek
In Denmark no-one knows the use of fenugreek for that - isn't it strange? I've only heard about it on the internet, I'm sure there are people in the UK who have used it for milk production and I'd bet there are people in Denmark too, but it's not sold for this purpose, I was quite surprised on the vast range of supplements specifically labelled and packaged for breastfeeding women in the US, I think in general things are less specifically marketed in the UK, so you can get fenugreek capsules, but it would be on the shelf in alphabetical order and herbs and supplements rarely suggest what they might be used for, I wonder if it is a legal thing, I've seen some homeopathic things that appear to be the same brand in the US as the UK, in the US, they will say on the bottle what the use is, in the UK there will be a booklet on the shelf that you can look it up in, but it won't say on the bottle. Anne Until not long ago, I had no clue what fenugreek was. Someone here had suggested it to me, although I can't remember who it was. I'm in Canada, and I have never heard of it before. I asked a friend of mine, and she as well had never heard of it. No one I talked to (currently breastfeeding moms or past breastfeeding moms) knew about it. I finally brought it up with my cousin, and she said that she had recently heard about it when she was pg with her DD2 (same age as my DD2) and she said she heard about it through her midwife. In all honesty, I didn't even know we had midwives here. I tried to search back when I was first pg with DD2, as that was something I thought I'd like to possibly consider. Closest midwife I could find was in another city, 3 hours away. Not sure where my cuz found her midwife, but it was this lady that informed her of fenugreek (as midwives seem to be more for the natural or herbal stuff over perscriptions and drugs, it seems) I know my bottle of fenugreek (capsules, from the health food store) said not to take while pregnant or nursing. It did mention something about helping for weight loss or controlling appetite, IIRC. I asked the lady at the store about the nursing issue, she just smiled and said she sells more fenugreek to nursing moms than anyone else. |

It was never mentioned to me by the midwives at the hospital, either. At the moment, at least where I live, there seems to be a great fenugreek drought. I tried a health food store and the woman looked at me with this blank look and then the man pointed it out on the shelf. They only had the capsules, which I found to be a bit too expensive ($AU35 - don't know how many were in there but they were large and the bottle was small so not too many!). This was one of those large chain health food stores with big tubs of whey for weightlifters and innumerable weight loss products out the front. Ugh! Then I tried another health food store and they had the seeds at $AU6 for 100 grams so now I'm happily drinking my fenugreek tea. When I asked about it at this second store, the woman immediately knew what I was talking about and said that at the moment she only has this one brand of fenugreek as other health food companies had stopped making it! Engram Ok, here's a really stupid question... The seeds... I bought 2 bags (400g each, for about $2CAN) of the seeds. I thought I could grind them up and make my own powder type stuff like they have in the capsules. A bottle of 100 capsules = $10CAN at least. Bottle of 250 capsules = along the lines of $22-$25CAN. These seeds seemed so much better and they were so cheap. I tried to chop and grind them up but found it was like grinding and chopping small rocks. How do you make the tea? Just boil these seeds in water or something? |

That's pretty much what the instructions on the box said. 1 teaspoon seeds, 1 cup water, boil, then simmer for 10 - 15 minutes, strain the seeds and drink. It's a yellowish-brown foul tasting brew... It boils down a fair bit so I add a bit of boiled water to make it up to a full cup. Presumably the good stuff is still in there even when I dilute it. I just coldn't drink it undiluted. Too horrible! I tried and gagged. Engram |
