Default Why is this getting to me?

I saw my friend's neighbor yesterday and until last week she was nursing her
baby girl. She works very long hours and was pumping during the workday and
nursing directly in the evenings/weekends.

When I saw her I asked her if she was still nursing and she said she just
stopped this week because it was "time" and also that her husband wanted her
to stop now because "He didn't want the baby to get too attached to the
breast".

The baby is just 9 months and her original goal was 6 months so she went 3
months longer than planned, and I know it's very very tough for her to be
pumping etc. but it's really bothering me that this child didn't get just 3
more months that the AAP recommends. It seems like many people think that 6
months is all you need to/should nurse for - but where does that number come
from? I hardly know this woman, and 9 months is a whole lot more than many
babies get, but it's really bothering me for some reason ( Just thought
I'd share...

I had to go to the ER one time, and the doctor was flabbergasted that
I was "still" nursing. He said that she was old enough to be off the
breast by now. Ohh how old was my baby then you might ask? She was
only 7 months old at that time! I really have NO idea where people get
thiese ideas that by 6 months your baby should be done breastfeeding!
And a doctor even!
He even tried to bully me into weaning just so I could take a certain
painkiller, which he claimed was not bf friendly. I told him, No
thanks sir, I will tough it out for my babys health.. My dh was very
mad, and let him know a few facts, and I did write a letter to the
hospital about it. Made me wonder how many other babies were weaned
because of this jerk.

It's probably not the age of the baby so much as the reasons for
stopping that's bugging you. Those reasons are "off" somehow even if
the baby was 12 months IMO, especially the -husband wanting her to stop-
reason.

CY was all, like:
I hardly know this
woman, and 9 months is a whole lot more than many babies get, but
it's really bothering me for some reason ( Just thought I'd

It bothers me, and I work long hours and nurse and pump...but maybe it's
just my personality type--I can't imagine just throwing in the towel. I've
invested too much. I may well stop pumping when Sprogly's around a year or
so, but wouldn't dream of stopping nursing now, or a month and a half from
now, or even at a year, unless that's what Sprogly wants. Just the thought
depresses me...our nursing sessions are our quality time together, even if
he does sleep through many of them.

I stopped nursning mine at 18 months, I am sure there are people who would
have thought that was too soon. There were PLENTY who
thought that was too long. We all have our own ideas of whats an appropriate
length of time.
Sounds like your friend did her best and while you wish she could have
continued, she nursed far longer than most people these days.
