The parents of a 14-month-old boy who weighed just 10 pounds when he was
found dead inside a home stocked with food were sentenced Friday to
three years in prison.

Wesley White, 28, and his former girlfriend Tahija Handberry, 25, both
of Asbury Park, pleaded guilty in April to manslaughter in the death of
their son, Jmeir White.

The boy was found dead on Aug. 22, 2004. His weight had dropped from 15
pounds in March 2004 to 10 pounds when paramedics found his body, and he
died of chronic malnutrition, prosecutors said.

Two months before the boy died, a caseworker from the state's Division
of Youth and Family Services visited the home and observed that other
children there were small, but took no action. The case led to new DYFS
rules requiring caseworkers and supervisors keep cases open until they
assess all children in a household as well as the caretaker.

The couple have two other children, who are being cared for by a relative.
