Caterpillar has a cold
She was a little stuffy for the last day or two, and now has
a runny nose. She's been coughing because of all the drool collecting in her throat, but now she's coughing more because her nose is draining. Ah-mah says it's because we don't dress her warmly enough and don't change her the moment she gets drool on her clothes, and wants to know why we aren't giving her medicine. (Is there any medicine you could even give a 5 month old? No fever, she's not so stuffy she has trouble nursing, and the only thing that bothers her is me wiping her nose.) Of course, this is the same Ah-mah who let her put her hand in yogurt this morning, even though Ah-mah knows she's allergic to milk... Phoebe -- yahoo address is unread - substitute mailbolt |

She seemed more unwell (not like her normal bubbly self) after and unusually long nap, so we tried a dose of Tylenol. The hot dry air is making her eczema act up, too, so we'll probably put a humidifier in the bedroom tonight. Thanks! Phoebe -- yahoo address is unread - substitute mailbolt |

Oh my. yikes. :-( Well, I guess you know what to make of Ah-mah's advice then.... :-) Personally, without a fever or inability to nurse because of stuffiness, I wouldn't give medication. (What would you give her? Doesn't sound like there's anything really "treatable" in her symptoms list?) Save the Tylenol for a fever, and try saline drops and a "booger sucker" for a stuffy nose. (and maybe a little lansinoh under her nose if it's running to stop it getting sore) And I second your idea of a humidifier Dawn |

My son just got over a particularly nasty cold (including a fever that had us at the ER) and we found that the 'Waterless Vaporizer' by Evenflo really helped. It has little pads that are soaked in a menthol/eucalyptus stuff that is released into the air. It kind of makes his whole room smell like Vick's VapoRub, but it seemed to really help. I know that we both picked up the cold from him and it certainly helped me breathe when I was sitting in his room rocking him through the rough spots... Manda |

Caterpillar has a cold
Arrr... sorry to hear about this! I don't
have any advice... My nanny thinks Pillbug is always cold. We keep the house at 70 degrees and he wears three layers of clothes. AND she still puts a blanket on him when he takes a nap in her arms! -- Anita -- Phoebe & Allyson wrote: She was a little stuffy for the last day or two, and now has a runny nose. There *must* be something else in the "stuffy nose and cough" formula or they wouldn't be able to market it different, afaik. (FWIW, buying two separate products makes more sense than buying a mixed product, because you can use only what you "need".) |

Labelled "Children under 2 years: Consult a doctor." Dextromethorphan is a sedating cough suppressant. It is contraindicated for a child under six months; I wouldn't use it under 12 months personally, and would be cautious under the age of two. But then, I don't recommend sedating antihistamines for kids under 12 months, either. Guess I'm more paranoid about SIDS than some. Lara |

You can tell Ah-mah that it's all grandpa's fault. He came and gave me his cold this weekend. I change my clothes the moment they get drool on them, and I'm still stuffy and miserable. Elaine |
