Well, the first lie is obvious. There is no such thing as "Mercury
Amalgams", that would be pure Mercury.

One normally doesn't talk about a solution of X in X. A "mercury amalgam"
is not "pure mercury" -- it is a contradiction in terms.

One normally doesn't talk in scientific terms when correcting John.
My point is that Mercury amalgam would be redundant and would just be
mercury.

You skipped the first part of my response where I said There is no
such thing as Mercury Amalgams. Sounds like somebody is nit-picking!

I know that -- I felt that you were giving him a much greater benefit of
the doubt than he deserves. Don't bother trying to find some kind of
possible meaning for the phrase "Mercury Amalgam." It's already been
explained to him that there cannot be any such thing, and these explanations
have never helped.

I do begin to wonder about his refusal to believe that autism does occur
among the Amish, and that its relatively low incidence among them (assuming
that there is in fact a low incidence of autism among the Amish) makes sense
if autism is primarily a genetic disorder. After all, the Amish are well
known to be a relatively inbred population, and if the initial population
lacked the genetic defect that can lead to autism, it would make sense
that their descendants would lack that genetic defect as well, given a
sufficiently low rate of spontaneous mutation. Could it be that JOHN's
own family history is such that he doesn't want to face up to the possible
negative effects of excessive inbreeding?
