Beating Death Case Delayed
Attorney Waiting For DCF Records

The case against three teenagers charged in the beating death of an
18-year-old in April has been delayed while the attorney for one awaits
a slew of records from child welfare authorities.

The three are charged with beating Alexandria Clouse-Desmond to death,
stuffing her body inside a cardboard box and putting it in a closet in a
Hartford apartment. They were in Superior Court in Hartford on Friday
for a joint probable cause hearing, but it was postponed.

The defendants and victim - who ran away from a mental hospital just
days before she was killed - all had been wards of the state as
juveniles and have records with the state Department of Children and
Families and with the Department of Mental Heath and Addiction Services.

Margaret Levy, the attorney for Darzell Weinstein, 18, asked for the
delay because she has not received thousands of documents she requested
from DCF.

Weinstein, Leslie Caraballo, 19, and Tiara Dixon, 18, are all charged
with murder and accessory to murder.

A fourth suspect, Michael Davis, 21, remains in custody in Massachusetts
as a fugitive from justice, pending extradition to Connecticut. He is
also expected to be charged with murder and tampering with evidence once
he is brought back to the state.

Levy asked for the delay Friday because "we have not received records
from the state Department of Children and Families. Hundreds of
thousands of records need to be provided to the defendant and the child
advocate," before the case can go forward, Levy said.

"On behalf of Mr. Weinstein, I requested those records weeks ago," Levy
said. "It is inappropriate for me to go forward" without reviewing the
files, she said.

Weinstein and the victim ran away together from Cedarcrest, a mental
hospital in Newington, five days before the murder.

Clouse-Desmond was killed April 27 in an apartment on Laurel Street
rented for Davis and Caraballo by the state Department of Mental Health
and Addiction Services.

Police say Weinstein, Dixon and Caraballo attacked Clouse-Desmond during
a Monopoly game after she accused one of the men of raping her. The
defendants kicked, punched, stomped and choked her before placing her
into a plastic garbage bag, then into a cardboard box that they put in a
closet, police said.

After Friday's short hearing, Dixon's maternal grandmother and aunt -
speaking to Dixon from spectators benches - told her how much they loved
her.

They said later that child welfare authorities took Dixon from her
mother at age 3 and placed her in foster care. She was adopted by a
family named Dixon when she was 6, the grandmother and aunt said.

Although the blood relatives did not seek custody, they said they wanted
to maintain a relationship with the girl. But they lost contact as she
moved through foster care to adoption.

"We've been looking for her for years," said Dixon's biological aunt,
Ayanna Williams. "We found out where she was in the paper."

Now that she is in state custody, the family has visited Dixon and
written to her.
