I'm bigger than I should be!
Just got back from the doctor (14 week check up). I asked him about the size
of my uterus, as I feel really big, and he said if he didn't know any better, he'd say I was 16 weeks along! We have ruled out twins, so it's not that. Has anyone else had this situation? Did you stay bigger than normal for the whole pregnancy? TIA Erin edd 11/12/04 |

TIA Erin edd 11/12/04 Hi Erin, I'm in a similar situation, since about 9 weeks I've looked very pregnant, my belly hasn't grown that much since but it has grown and I look 5 or 6 months along, I'm just 15 weeks, people are really surprised when I tell them my edd they expect me to say August or September - not November! When I asked my doc she just shrugged and said everyone is different. I haven't gained much weight, it's all belly. This is my first baby - I had a m/c last year but at 11 weeks and I wasn't even showing then. Anyone? Bo |

Guesstimating the gestational age of a pregnancy by palpation isn't very accurate and the difference between a 14-week and a 16-week uterus isn't much (a couple of centimeters at the most). If you were at the stage where a fundal height measurement was being taken, you'd still have a perfectly "normal" measurement, since the measurement is equal to the weeks of gestation in centimeters +/- 2=3 cm. So, you may be slightly bigger than "average" but you're really not bigger than you "should be". -- Be well, Barbara Mom to Sin (Vernon, 2), Misery (Aurora, 4), and the Rising Son (Julian, 6) Aurora (in the bathroom with her dad)--"It looks like an elephant, Daddy." TIA Erin edd 11/12/04 Yep, when I was 12 weeks (my calculation) the doc said I was measuring large. She said I appeared to be 16 weeks instead. I went for an ultrasound and confirmed her suspicions... I was actually further along than I thought. In essence, I got to skip a whole month ;-) Nan |

In my first pregnancy I was palpated as being bigger than I should have been at 6 weeks. Since DH had been out of the country until the cycle I conceived I was pretty sure of my dates It turned out to just be normal variation and my uterus size was "normal" for the rest of the pregnancy. Mind you, the OB I saw back then never actually measured my fundal height, he just felt around a bit and said that it was normal so I gathered I was ok. -- Cheryl Mum to Shrimp (11 Mar 99), Thud (4 Oct 00) and Mischief (30 Jul 02) |
