Default Emma is orange!

She's nine months in a couple of days. We started solids just before
Christmas and at around the same time she started to become jaundice.
It comes and goes throughout the day.
She went to the pead last week and they took some blood (which I made
a fast exit for and left DH to deal with it) and some wee samples.
Here's a thing. The pead said he'd seen lots of orange babies in his
time and that Emma was one of the most impressive. He said that
nearly all of them had been BF past the 6 month stage and that there
was no real cause for it but perhaps it was their bodies way of
dealing with the BM. He said we should know the results of the test
sometime this week and that unless they threw up anything more serious
he would see her again in 3 months. He didn't think that her "failure
to thrive" was due to my Thyroxine dose or the insulin. He said she
was a very active happy baby and that was probably burning off her
fuel.

Anybody else heard of this?

Does she eat a lot of carrots? Seriously. My little sister was very orange
from too many carrots as a baby.

I have heard of it in that the baby has had too many yellow vegetables.
Other than that, yes my DD1 had liver problems and was jaundiced, but if she
were having problems with her liver, she would be more "sick" other than
looking orange. Have you been feeding too many yellow vegetables?

Are the whites of her eyes discolored? That's a sure way to determine if
she's really having liver troubles. I raced my son to the pediatrician when
he was about that age, after having finished a stash of fruits and veggies
from the freezer (fresh carrots, sweet potatoes, squash) and the doctor said
it's VERY common for babies (breastfed or not) to become orange from eating
a lot of beta carotene and that it's not unhealthy at all.

Sounds like this is what it is, especially if the eyes are still white and
the tests are coming back normal.

That was my thought as well. Eating alot of carrots will do that.

Jaundice is another thought, but typically the whites of the eyes will be
yellowed too. Plus, the ped probably would have caught that by now.

My daughter turned orange when she ate sweet potatoes. She didn't even need
a lot of them to turn orange. Occassionally, if she's been eating a lot of
carrot sticks, the tip of her nose will still turn orange.

We considered this and I cut out all the yellow and orange fruit and
veg like swede, carrots, peach and apricot but it made no difference.

It can take several days/weeks to see a difference...
