Default Stripping Membranes?

Just a quick question. I have been wondering for a while, just how does the dr.
"strip" your membranes?

Thanks,
Jeri

I don't even remember if there was something more complex than a gloved
fingernail? Possibly just a somewhat bluntish flatish utensil. It wasn't
super comfy but it wasn't as painful as... well, okay, it was only
slightly more uncomfortable than any other internal exam at that point.

AFAIK they do an internal exam and scratch the amniotic sac with a
fingernail. IIRC that's how my OB explained to me. In that case it must
only be possible if you are dilated a little bit...

During an internal exam they sweep a finger in
between the cervix and the amniotic sac a bit. This
irritates the membranes. Some do it more aggressively
than others. There is a small risk that it will
rupture your membranes. It's unclear how useful it is
in getting labor going.

Best wishes,
Ericka
