Default story books VS poem

hi,

at what age do you start reading poem to children. at 3, i assume a
story book with pictures would be more appealing but would also like
to have a mix of both eventually. any recommendations of poetry
collections that comes with colourful pictures too? thank you.

There are some beautifully illustrated picture books of poems and songs. If
you check with a children's librarian or a knowledgeable person in a good
children's bookstore, they should be able to help.

Since I teach music, I buy mostly books which are of songs.

A few titles off hand (books are at school, so I can't give publishers

Frog went A-courtin (lots of versions)
I know an old lady who swallowed a fly (and other things!-again, lots of
versions)
What a Wonderful World
10 little Monkeys jumping on the bed
Little Green Frog
No mirrors in my Nana's house
Lift Every Voice and Sing

My favorite poets for children are Jack Pretlutsky, Eloise Greenfield, Karla
Kuskin, and Shel Silverstein. Pretlusky has several smaller collections
which have really nice illustrations. One of my student's favorites is
"The baby Uggs are hatching", which is a collection of poems about not so
monstorous monsters.

Dd liked rhyming stories from about 6 months. I used to say "jabberwocky" to
her if she got upset and it calmed her down. She also liked the Hairy
Maclairy stories from about the same time and still loves them.
If you're talking about books of poetry, she's just got out "Rymes for Annie
Rose" (Shirley Hughes) from the library for the second time as she really
likes it. That has short poems (about 16 lines) and an illustration. She's 2
3/4 now, but I first got it for her about 6 months ago.
She also likes me reciting from heart-"Whenever I walk in London Street" (AA
Milne) is something we say together when out walking, and there are other
ones too. It's funny to hear her trying to recite them on her own now!
