Huntsman Vetoes Ritalin Bill
The Governor vetoed the ritalin bill yesterday. The legislation would have
prevented teachers from recommending psychiatric care about kids to their
parents.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Gov. Jon Huntsman vetoed the so-called Ritalin
bill -- a measure that would have forbidden teachers from advising parents
to seek professional counseling or medication for troubled or disruptive
children.

-----------------

Banning suggesting counseling was what killed this bill.

Well, really - the teachers shouldn't be making any
suggestions regarding a specific diagnosis or treatment.
They should express concerns about the child's behavior or
progress and suggest an evaluation.

What a complete nutter.

Anyone who's not a complete and total weirdo would have signed the bill.

Not surprisingly, he's a Rethuglican.

Good. Some teacher prefer to just have kids, shut up and sit still to make
their life easier

Indeed, we need more kids on drugs.

He vetoed it, he didn't sign it.

If I read it correctly, the bill would have prevented schools from
recommending drugs. And yet he vetoed it, so now it will not become law.

Agreed. However, these bills have such a chilling effect that teachers and
counselors may decide to keep quiet at times when something is serious.
Imagine a teacher being intimidated by such legislation into not reporting
that a student is having problems, and then that student picks up the family
rifle and repeats what happened this week.

I assume that you are fully familiar with the law as written?

We need the right treatment for properly diagnosed conditions. This bill
would have prevented that.

Am I correct in my understanding that the law would have prohibited
school officials from requiring students to take prescription drugs?
