Why are so many teenagers so foul mouthed and disgusting?

Why are so many teenagers so foul mouthed and disgusting - the
teenagers around my area (Salisbury area) seem to revel in being as
foul-mouthed and abusive as they can?

Girls in particular are the worst!

Because many adults have foul language, they hear it on tv, in music, etc.
I don't think teenagers have the corner on bad language.

-- because they can get away with it

-- because someone is trying to stop them from doing it,
so it's a way of showing off their independence from such forces

-- because teenagers have very little power, usually.
No substantial income; no home of their own, just their parents'
home where they have to follow rules they may not agree with, etc.
It's one outlet they have for frustration, or for exerting power
over others.

-- it's a status symbol, demonstrating independence from
parental rules. Later on, at workplaces etc., not swearing
is more of a status symbol perhaps, showing self-control etc.

Girls doing it mo really? I hadn't noticed. Are you
sure it doesn't just seem that way. I suppose there's more of
a shock value when girls do it, so they get more mileage out
of it and enjoy doing it more.

With kids of my own now, I recall back to my teen years and remember
being quite the pig. It was how I wanted to portray myself, like a
tough guy, a funny guy, rude, crude and 2KOOL 4SKOOL.

With the glass ceiling breached nowadays, girls seem to find that boys
are responding to more empowered girls, maybe because their own moms
are more empowered these days. Being crass, nasty, and rude is a way
for some girls to use that empowerment. Maybe (?)

Some but not all. Maybe not even "most." I know a lot of foul-mouthed kids
who don't come from foul-mouthed homes. They do it because it's cool
among their peer group, etc., etc. I remember my first year at college.
The f-word was everyone's favorite word. I even picked it up for awhile.
Gave it up years ago and have never used it in front of my children,
but I know my daughter knows the word quite well.

Well, that really wasn't my intention. After all, many kids with
"respectable" parents swear too. But, it just bugs me when people single out
teens for bad behaviour when it can be found in any age group. Elderly
people can be just as rude or ruder than some teens I know.. Middle age
people can be ruder or equally rude. Elderly people can be sweethearts, as
can middle aged people - and even teens. Every group has its loudmouthed
idiots, and every group has its sweethearts - and everything in between.
