OT ish - Infant and mouse invasion
My six month old is just at "that stage". He is really hating being
left on his back, he's not able to sit up by himself, and he can't be on the couch because he's really good at rolling over, which means he'll fall off. (I can't really sling him for very long, because my back is too ruined from the first one...) Here's my question. He mostly gets put down on a comforter on the living room floor. We are currently suffering from a truly heinous mouse invasion. Like, one or two on glue traps every three/four days. I'm having a nervous breakdown. I don't know where all they are running; though the babe is never left unobserved, so there's not been any first-hand encounters between him and mice. How freaked out do I have to be about him being on or near the floor? He's gonna crawl soon - I think I might just steam the whole house before then. -- Cheri Stryker mom to DS1 - 7 yrs, and DS2 - 6 months |

I'm the one that had a nervous fit at ants crawling across my kitchen floor. Mice would probably make me neurotic. Can you get a cat? Semi-seriously. Jess |

Kit (almost 5) had his first encounter with mouse guts this week. One of our cats plays with mice in the shower because they can't escape, and recently she's taken to eating them in there as well. So now he knows what mouse entrails look like and fortunately he seemed to think it was funny[*] rather than scary. He did say there were two in there and I corrected him to point out that the head was separate from the rest, but he just laughed even more. [*] I think the amusing part was that the cat had done something yucky and daddy was annoyed. -- Dave mail da (without the space) http://www.llondel.org So many gadgets, so little time |

Its this hexagonal "fence" that basically isolates the outside world from the baby. You will still need to supervise of course, but at least you don't have to worry about the mice getting to baby while your back is turned. (It's been great for us, because E and the 18 month old 90 lb puppy-at-heart dog are both "at that stage" !!) Oh, and de-mouse of course! :-) PK |

I'm a freak with mice so I'd get a play pen for sure. In reality even if a mouse ran over him I doubt it would be to big of a deal. I'm assuming you are taking steps to get the hideous little things out. ;-) -- Nikki, mama to Hunter 4/99 Luke 4/01 Brock 4/06 Ben 4/06 I had a mouse problem once. Nothing worked except poison. Dh was against poison. I eventually packed my bags and said he could live with the mice. Hunter and I were getting out of there! We flung poison and they all disappeared in short order. |

When I was a kid we used mouse poison in our house once. The buggers had a habit of crawling under the built-in dishwasher to perish. You got to know that dead mouse smell in the kitchen after awhile, blech. I prefer the cat solution! I think my house might have had mice before we moved in, but not a sign of 'em since we got here with the cat. KD & G |

I think my house might have had mice before we moved in, but not a sign of 'em since we got here with the cat. We had a couple of cats but I think they must have been stuffed, lol. They did a pretty good job but they (the mice) got in the walls and attic. It was just horrible. I don't recall a terrible smell although I'm sure there must have been one. It was fall so I had the windows open etc. We were more on top of spraying the foundation and kept the poison in the crawl space, attic, and walls so we didn't have any trouble after that. I'm guessing they were probably still down in the unfinished basement area because dh had so many boxes of crap down there but they didn't invade my area. That was an old house out in the country surrounded by fields. Hard to keep mice away. We used to have a bunch of barn cats but that year we didn't so that probably made a difference too. We also had more snakes (not in the house!) after the cats were gone. Cats are good. That was not my favorite part of living in the country that is for sure! -- Nikki, mama to Hunter 4/99 Luke 4/01 Brock 4/06 Ben 4/06 |

We've used poison before in this house and our last house (old house, impossible to keep them out completely) and never had trouble with them dying in the walls. But now we have a cat - I've seen some mouse droppings but no mouse, so I'm not sure our cat is doing much, but I don't want to put out poison now because I don't want out cat to get sick. I know the cat *can* catch mice, she's caught a squirrel(!), but she may be lazy now. |

Like, one or two on glue traps every three/four days. Oooh, yes, been there, only we had *rats*. Big ones. I totally understand. :P I kept on top of sweeping/mopping, and no food was ever left out. I did steam clean once or twice, but to be honest, it was such a pain that I just stopped (no housekeeper of the year award here...). FWIW, Micah never (that I know of) ate any rat poo, no rats ever crawled into his crib and started nibbling on him in the middle of the night, he never went crawling after a rat and grabbed its tail, and he never picked up any of the dreaded rat-born diseases that I was obsessing about. I eventually stopped worrying much about it in terms of Micah, although we *did* keep on our landlady about it, and if it hadn't gotten any better, we might have moved. (*Might*, since I consider moving up there with steam cleaning in terms of Things I Like To Do With My Spare Time.) Good luck!! I know it's a real PITA, but at least in our experience, Micah didn't suffer any negative consequences from our little rat friends. Oh, except for the horrendous temper tantrums he's been throwing lately. Em mama to Micah, 11/14/04 |
