Here's a non-exclusive list of some AAP approved antibiotics: http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/...tml#antibiotic Many pass to the milk in very small amounts, but no adverse effects are expected. The vast majority of antibiotics could safely be given directly to a baby of that age, in much higher doses than the baby would get through the milk. Lara |

friendly and wouldn't pass to the baby (said baby being 18 mths old) All antibiotics will pass onto the baby via the milk. However, all do so in very small amounts, not enough to do any harm to the baby. It would be prudent to avoid very powerful antibiotics with dangerous side effects which could be harmful to YOU (stuff like chloramphenicol...), but in general, you can safely take about any antibiotic that you need, without concern of risk to the baby. If you want to ask about a specific antibiotic, feel free. Naomi CAPPA Certified Lactation Educator (either remove spamblock or change address to to e-mail reply.) |

friendly and wouldn't pass to the baby (said baby being 18 mths old) my experience is that doctors seem to be quite knowledgeable about this, even if they don't know much else about medications and breastfeeding. It seems that there are some that are best and though they may not be the best for the particular infection, you use them as a first line of attack and only take the ones that could be more of a problem if necessary. I know that flucloxacillin and amoxycillin are fine. |

I've seen many incidents where a doctor prescribes an antibiotic and tells a mother she will have to pump and dump (if they're familiar with the concept) or give formula for a week to 10 days. And often as not, that antibiotic turns out to be something like amoxicillin or cephalexin, both of which are L1s. In MY experience, doctors tend to flaunt their ignorance of breastfeeding when it comes to prescribing antibiotics. I know that flucloxacillin and amoxycillin are fine. AFAIK, all penicillin-based ABX are considered very safe. -- tristyn www.tristyn.net |
