Default Kids and language

Hello,

I have a terrific kid. His age is two years and two months. He is
healthy and very active. He loves to watch kids cartoons, outing like
any healthy child. However, he hasn't started to use language. He is
not even using words like Mama and Baba. My doctors say some kids start
to talk very late. But I am just begging to worry. Can anybody with
similar experience please advise me what I need to do?
Thanks

Assefa

I can offer some reassurance. Growing up, our next door neighbor's youngest
(of 6) didn't talk until she went to kindergarten. Everyone was worried about
her and assumed she had developmental delays. Today, she has a PhD and works
as a newspaper columnist.

Guess she was just waiting until she had something to say ;-)

Of course, continue to consult your Dr., who will help determine whether you
need to test hearing, etc -- but basically it sounds like the advice you've
gotten is sound -- TTSP (this, too, shall pass)

Who could take a day or two of Henry (12, and every bit the smart aleck
back-talking adolescent) not being able to talk ;-)

There is no reason not to have his hearing and speech checked out. My son

the testing quite fun, and I thought it was very interesting to watch. He
turned out not to need any speech therapy, but I'm sure the therapy would

have
been fun for him as well.

I think reaching age two with no words is quite reason enough to have a

child
checked out. It is rare enough that, though many children who speak this

late
have no problems, there is a good chance that a problem could be present.

Many
such speech problems can be easily helped early on and completely

corrected.

The most important things are whether his hearing is good and whether he
understands what you say to him. If he hears and understands well, chances

are
he will speak very well soon. But a professional should make sure.

I agree with Helen -- have him checked by a speech therapist. My older
daughter wasn't talking when she turned two and a half, and her pediatrician
finally bullied me into taking her in. She had already developed an
extensive vocabulary of signs (invented them herself) to communicate with
us. She could imitate sounds, but would not say any words She was diagnosed
as having "verbal apraxia" -- a neurological glitch that made it difficult
for her to connect the sounds of words with their meanings (or something --
I really don't understand how it worked.)

Her therapist gave us some suggestions on what to work on, and within a
couple of months she was speaking in sentences. But verbal apraxia that is
untreated for too long can lead to serious difficulties in language
development. Some kids don't get diagnosed until they enter school, and by
that time it can be very difficult to deal with.

Thank you. You have all been very helpful. To be honest I just started
to worry after his second birthday. I am sure he doesn't have a hearing
problem. He like to mumble over the phone. I always call him from the
office. He even tries to repeat some songs from parts of kids movies.

I will definitly follow up seriously with developmental specialists.
Thank you again.

Both of my daughters did not start talking well until after thier third
birthday. I have to admit I was a little concerned at first because my
daughters cousin was talking clearly at 2 and my daughter could barely
be understood at 3. Today however at 7 and 5 they both talk perfectly
fine (and scream pretty loud too).

If you are still concerned however it is ok to talk to your child's
doctor and ask them. I also came across a pretty good child developmetn
checklist that I would be willing to send you if you like. Email me at
if you would like me to send
it to you. It is not to take the place of a professional but it is a
good way to know if you really should consider a professionals help or
not.

PS - My mother said I did not barely say a word until I was almost 4
because I was so watched over by my sisters. I would point and they
would get it for me...that soon ended however and I have many memories
of them saying get it yourself!

Well by my mother, I was told I didnt talk until one day at
kindergarden were my teacher asked what I did at my birthday. Since
then Ive been a motormouth. I think there is absoluterly nothing to
worry about.
