Lawsuit Targeting Nevada's Child Welfare System Moves Ahead

A federal judge has ruled a lawsuit targeting Nevada's child welfare
system will go forward. Attorneys for the state and Clark County asked
the court to dismiss the suit.

Filed last August, it accuses officials of failing to protect the health
and safety of children in the county's care.

Attorneys for the National Center for Youth Law argued the ongoing
threat to children is reason enough to proceed with the case. But
lawyers for the county asserted systemic change should happen by
administrative process, not court order.

Judge Robert Jones delayed ruling on that issue and instead ordered both
sides to move forward with the discovery process.

Gloria Sturman, attorney for Clark County, said, "We believe that we are
making some progress and taking a serious effort to remedy situations
and this will continue."

Bill Grimm, National Center for Youth Law, said, "We feel confident that
once the facts he wants before him are out, that he will feel compelled
to issue some relief from this court."

The judge did release former Governor Kenny Guinn from the lawsuit. He'd
been named as the state's chief executive officer.

However, everyone else remains, including the county commissioners.

The lawsuit seeks only to improve the child welfare system.
