Packet based baby monitor?
Hi folks. misc.kids.consumers seems a better place for this post, but then that group seems pretty dead. So anyway, it's getting to be time that we looked more seriously at a decent baby monitor, so our nearly 9 month old son can begin sleeping in his own room. We currently have an inexpensive 900MHz model that we got in a baby shower, but the thing is really very noisy. If we turn it up loud enough to hear our baby, then the static is more than a little bit distracting, which isn't going to work well for when we're trying to sleep. I'm guessing these things were nice and quiet when they were first marketed, but now that there are so many chordless phones and computer wireless data data networks bouncing around on 900MHz, 2.4GHz and 5.xGHz, it's going to be hard to find an analog baby monitor that isn't too noisy. Which leads to the question of this post: Is there such a thing as a baby monitor, on whatever frequency band, that sends packet data, possibly retries relevant packets, and definitely tosses out irrelevant packets? It almost seems like we should just get a couple of gizmos, one a wireless microphone, and one a wireless speaker, and hook it up to our existing 802.11b/g network at home. Any suggestions? We just want something quiet enough to let us sleep, and still keep tabs on our little Alden. Video'd be nice, but isn't really necessary, so that's only on our list if it won't jack the price much. Thanks! |

It has a sound activated feature, so it's dead quiet unless she's making noise. It worked so well, we bought a second one when we needed a new one. |
