"Lactation Rooms"
Hey, I know I haven't been around in ages, but just wanted to pop in
with something I saw today. I was at the student union and, while in the ladies room, noticed a door leading off it labeled "Lactation Room." I was all ready to bristle at the idea of needing a special room for breastfeeding (the building has numerous areas with couches and chairs just perfect for that kind of thing!) and then I noticed that the door had a coded lock, and I went and read the sign. Seems that the room is for the use of the employees of the building and is outfitted with an electric pump. The sign noted that if any visitors to the building needed to make use of the pump, they should call a certain phone number to gain access to the room. (The sign also mentioned that it COULD be used for breastfeeding if a mother chose, but nothing to indicate that this was the expected use, or that moms weren't welcome to nurse anywhere they wished.) Very cool. Naomi |

Cool! and nice to see you again, Naomi. I just recently began reading
MKB again :-) Karen (mom to James, who nursed forever, and Joey, for whom I pumped forever) |

"Lactation Rooms"
My husband once asked why there's a "ladies lounge" in his building-which is
basically set up like a nice living room area with a refrigerator. The reason is that many, many years and several buildings ago, the founder's wife was working with him, and still breastfeeding/pumping, so she made sure there was a place to do it. Her children are now in high school and college, but every time they've moved buildings, she's made sure there's a place so that breastfeeding mamas can pump. And, since all of support and sales are in cubicals (which is where most of the women are-development has private offices, but is almost exclusively male), anyone who is pumping NEEDS some privacy. -- Donna DeVore Metler Orff Music Specialist/Kindermusik Mother to Angel Brian Anthony 1/1/2002, 22 weeks, severe PE/HELLP And Allison Joy, 11/25/04 (35 weeks, PIH, Pre-term labor) |

What a fantastic woman with great foresight! Is it possible to find out her name? For her vision (I'm thinking this room must have been there nearly 20 years), she goes down in my book as a National Living Treasure (even though I spose she's in the US and I'm in Oz). Very cool. Great to see you, Naomi. That *is* cool. My employer has such a thing as well, and I do appreciate it! I remember going off-site for a class one day when DS was a baby. I took my pump and asked the administrative staff (female) to help me find a private place to pump. We figured out that a large, handicapped restroom, with an office chair moved in, would work the best. I was okay with that, and went to pump at my lunch break as planned. Well, when I finished and came out wheeling the chair to return in, you would have thought I was doing the most embarrassing thing possible. Those formerly helpful women were suddenly shoo-ing me around, worrying that the boss might see what I had done. I got the feeling they thought he'd be upset that the office chair was in the restroom. I never quite understood it. Ah, well..... -Patty, mom of 1+2 |
