Default Eczema in b/f baby

My 5mnth DD is exclusively bf. She's had a skin infection for the
past 5 weeks and my doc has finally decided it is infected eczema.
She's got meds to ease it but I wondered if I could change/add
something to my own diet to help her.
I read somewhere that dairy in the mums diet could be a factor.
Should I try without it for a while to see if it helps? Anything else
I should avoid?

Since she's almost ready (in the next few months anyway) to try
'proper'' food, what should I avoid with the eczema in mind?

Would love your advice and experience.

TIA
Diane (UK)

Hi Diane,

My baby boy gets bad eczema on his face and behind his knees. I am keeping a
food diary now, and have found out that pear makes him really flare up. Once
I had stopped the pear and give banana instead he has cleared up. I also
avoid dairy in my diet, as my other son had a milk allergy.
Any food can cause eczema. Here is a link;

Good luck I know it's no fun. My eldest grew out of it when he was around 6.

Hi -

Eczema is typically an allergic reaction. THe hard part is figuring out
what the allergy is.

One possibility is allergens in mom's diet coming to the baby via
breastmilk. The most common such allergens a
cow's milk protein (NOT lactose)
egg
wheat
shellfish
nuts
soy
Any food, of course, is a potential allergen. You can approach the
problem with a comprehensive food diary (EVERYTHING you ingest,
including medications and vitamins). Keep the diary for several days,
noting in it not just your food but your baby's health status. Continue
the diary, but after the first few days start eliminating the two or
three things that you think are most likely culprits. I'd go for milk,
eggs and nuts at the outset, unless something in your food diary
suggests a different food. Bear in mind that there may be multiple
allergens, so you may need to go through a process of adding and
removing foods, always using the diary, to figure out where the problems
lie.

But eczema can also be caused by skin contact allergies. Dyes and
fragrances in soaps are common culprits, and so is wool. But other
materials can be an issue as well. Try washing your baby's clothing in
a dye-free fragrance-free soap, and use just plain water on her skin as
often as possible. If you MUST use soap on her, use something very
plain, like Neutrogena dye-free fragrance-free gentle face soap.

My web site has lots of information about going milk-free, which is more
challenging than it might appear at first glance. The Food Allergy and
Anaphylaxis Network has information on all the most common allergens,
and is linked from my site.

I hope this helps,

If you're exclusively breastfeeding her (no formula), you should cut out
all dairy from your diet (and I mean ALL dairy...you should read some
labels on processed foods). Alpro soymilk and Pure spreads are both
excellent substitutes.

Egg, as well (according to my allergist) is a huge allergen in babies
and a leading cause of eczema in babies. So if you can cut out egg too
(again, in baked goods too), that might make a difference.

Cut it for about 2 weeks. Really cut it out, and see what happens. We
saw some serious improvements quickly.

If the dairy makes a difference, then keep that out for a while. Stick
with fruits (avoiding citrus, that seems to be a trigger for some) and
veggies. Delaying solids might be a good idea for her as well, since it
gives her system more time to get up to speed and protect itself.

Beth Kelves will have more ideas for you than I do...she's the allergy
queen here :-)

Thanks for the help ladies. DD's infection has cleared up following a
short course of Fucidin HC. Obviously I don't want to use HC as a
matter of course so will be following the advice you have all given
and carrying on my research. I'm also going to take a probiotic and
am looking into giving DD something too to build up her good bacteria
as the antibiotics seem to have wiped it out. She's now got a nasty
case of fungal nappy rash!!
