This brings back a memory for me. Disclaimer: quite a sad story

My brought her boyfriend home from college one summer. Everyone in the
family loved this man to no end. He was one of the nicest, friendliest, most
open people any of us had ever met. To understand the story, we should note
that my sister is white and her boyfriend was black. Said boyfriend and my
brother went boating. To make a long story (very long story) short,
boyfriend could not swim, boat capsized and he drowned.

I was at summer camp and was completely oblivious. A while later my Dad was
explaining the whole scene to me. He showed me the clippings from the story
in the newspaper at the time. There had been what my parents thought was
inappropriate reporting of the incident. They had reported that he was a
vagrant and had to mention that he was black several times per sentence. So
my folks wrote a letter to the editor. They then received a bunch of
letters; from the local chapter of the KKK (I did not know we even HAD a
local chapter of the KKK) and all this stuff. I read one aloud, "You ****ing
n1gg3r lover. Oh My God, people still think this way?" I said. My gentle Dad
replied "N1gg3r Lover, God Damned Right I am a N1gg3r Lover. N1gg3r Lover!
N1gg3r Lover! That's me." Now whenever I see someone write such ignorant
dribble, I picture my Dad yelling N1gg3r Lover, N1gg3r Lover around the
office. Man that makes me smile.
