Birthday ideas?

Anybody have ideas for a theme or entertainment for
a birthday party for my daughter turning 12?

Last year we made our own Harry Potter murder mystery.

Also: ideas for a birthday gift for my niece turning 16?

I'd ask her.

By 16, it's almost impossible to make gift suggestions without knowing
the child. What are her hobbies and interests? Though with most kids
this age, you can't go wrong with a gift card to a music store.

Last year we made our own Harry Potter murder mystery.

My neighbors just had birthday parties in one weekend for their 12 and 14
year olds. They rented one of those inflatable bouncers and it was a HUGE
hit! The murder mystery sounds like fun, but if you want to keep it simple,
the bouncer might be a good way.

I don't know about a theme as I don't know your daughter. But, my
12-year-old likes skating, movies, bowling. You could incorporate a birthday
party into one of those ideas above. Have a sleep over and make your own
pizzas, watch a movie, play truth or dare games.

As for a 16-year-old, I would probably give them money or a gift certificate
to their favorite store, unless I knew them very well and could get
something that they were specifically interested in.
