Child Support from the unemployed?
My employer is a supplier to the automotive industry. Due to the economy
and decrease in demand for our product, they have shut down part of the operation for a month. My last day at work was Dec. 12th and I'll return to work on Jan. 12th. I'll get some holiday pay but my only other household income will be unemployment. My maximum unemployment benefits is $511/wk gross, less 10% withheld for taxes. I thought it was interesting that unemployment only pays you a maximum of $141 per week for dependant children no mater how many you have, and they don't count a spouse if you have children. So, out of my ~$460 take home pay, over $200 will go to CS leaving about $250 for me, my wife, and my son to live on. I just thought it was interesting that $141 per week was enough for a spouse and any number of kids when unemployment is paying it. Why don't they count the number of dependants and use the same guidelines that fathers have to pay in CS? Since I'm only off a month I don't think it's worth trying to get the support changed and then have to change it back a couple of weeks later. It would probably be time for me to go back to work by the time I had my court date. I just thought it was interesting how little they expect us to live off of but how much they think CS should be. I've paid into the system for 25 years, now my wife, kid, and myself has to live on less unemployment than a single man with no dependants would get to live on. RogerN |

Better known as double standards; one for the royalty and one for the peasants. RogerN |
