Book Recommendations, Please
I'm purchasing Happiest Baby on the Block. What others do you recommend? I have What to Expect the First Year (though I can't seem to find it) and the Toddler Years. |

"The No-Cry Sleep Solution" by Elizabeth Pantley "The Baby Book" by Dr. Sears "Raising your Spirited Child" by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka I wouldn't bother with the WTE series. While some of the information is correct, it is intermingles with incorrect information. It becomes very confusing trying to figure out what is correct. -- Brigitte aa #2145 http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/j/joshuaandkaterina/ http://www.babiesonline.com/babies/i/isabellazora/ "Readers are plentiful; thinkers are rare." ~ Harriet Martineau |

The Sears books are also great. I have What to Expect the First Year (though I can't seem to find it) and the Toddler Years. I wouldn't bother with those, tbh. Some of the info is incorrect, & they really couldn't be called pro-breastfeeding, or pro-thinking-for-yourself. -- Hedgehog |

news:G9hdc.216186$1p.2503176@attbi_s54... I'm purchasing Happiest Baby on the Block. What others do you recommend? I love the book _Everyday Blessings: The Inner Work of Mindful Parenting_ by Myla and Jon Kabat-Zinn. Every time I read even just one page of it, it helps me be a more patient, loving parent, and to really connect with what my kids' needs are in the present moment. Another book I refer to often is _The Quick Reference Guide to Your Child's Health: from Birth to Age Five_. Unfortunately I'm not sure where it is ATM so I can't give you the author. Every time Julie's had some symptom or other it's been very convenient to be able to see what she might have, exactly what indicates a call or visit to the doctor and how promptly, and how to help make her comfortable. It also answers all basic questions on newborn care. The "parenthood" section of _Pregnancy to Parenthood_ by Linda Goldberg, et al is great, though I don't know if you want to buy that now that you're done with the "pregnancy" part. _The Nursing Mother's Companion_ by Kathleen Huggins is essential IMO. A book that might be helpful is Sheila Kitzinger's _The Year After Childbirth_, which focuses on the new mother and *all* the adjustments - physical, mental, and emotional - she goes through. -- Cheryl S. "The No-Cry Sleep Solution" by Elizabeth Pantley snip some other books that I haven't read I absolutely second the recommendation of the No-Cry book! I also like "So That's What They're For - Breastfeeding Basics" by Janet Tamaro. Right now I've got "The Hip Mama Survival Guide" by Ariel Gore out from the library. I haven't read all of it but I really like it so far. VERY different from most other advice books out there. Katie |

I have What to Expect the First Year (though I can't seem to find it) and the Toddler Years. What a great question I try not to be much of a "book parent" but then again, my Mum (a teacher) has worked in early childhood arenas for many years and so I guess she is usually my "book" for a lot of things .. and my fabulous (and free) LC is my reference for breastfeeding and food-related issues. Having said that, I think some sort of reference book is a good idea just so that you have something to fall back on. I'm told "Baby Love" by Robin Barker is good, but haven't read it myself (although I do plan on buying it this time), and the NCSS is apparently the bible if your child is having sleep issues (luckily DD didn't but I know where I can borrow a copy if I need it .... and I'm also told that the "Babywise" books by Gary Ezzo are only useful as door-stops. I have been given books by Dr Christopher Greene, Penelope Leach, Miriam Stoppard etc ... all of which have some good information, but which I temper with my own judgement (as I'm sure you do too . E.g. Chris Greene advocates controlled crying which may work for some but just isn't my cup of tea. I have used Dr Sear's web page: http://askdrsears.com/ and that of the ABA: http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/ many times. I do find the 'When your child is Ill" reference book put out by Dr Bernard Valman is useful when DD is sick .... although there's a lot of misinformation in that too - the guy recommends weaning at 6 mo (which I'm sure means introducing solids and therefore beginning the weaning process which should take another 18 mo!) I look forward reading everyone's suggestions. Amanda -- DD 15th August 2002 1 tiny angel Nov 2003 EDD 19th August 2004 |

"Elana Kehoe" wrote My sister gave me her Your Baby And Child, by Penelope Leach. It has certainly made things easier for me!! I *love* that book. Key phrase from it "Read the baby, not a book". :-) Jean |
