5 month old biting
My daughter is 5 1\2 months old and has had her 2 bottom teeth for a few
weeks now. All has been fine before now with only the occassional bite. But she got sick on Saturday and had a fever and was very grumpy. Now, while being sick (for 3 days), she has bit me several times and pretty hard. My left nipple is so sore! It hurts the whole time she's nursing on it. I've been using Lansinoh on it today. I need to know how to keep her from biting so hard. She's only 5 months old and doesn't really understand the word no. I must say that I will not push her face to my breast to make her let go though. Any more ideas? And is there a way to help this raw spot to heal quicker? Do you think it would hurt my supply on that side to let her nurse the other side most of the time and the left side only occassionally. Hopefully, it will heal soon but I need to know how to keep her from biting so hard. I think she is teething again. My other 2 children bit me when they were nursing but never this hard. Thanks! .. : * ~ * : . Sharon .. : * ~ * : . |

5 month old biting
Larry has some good ideas and I am sure he'll jump in. But what worked for
me was to stick my finger in the side of the mouth (where there's no teeth!) to break her grip and say no (even if she doesn't understand, she will get the message). Others say to just stop the nursing session and put baby down, but I could never bear to do that cos she would cry so hard. Good luck! "sharonx9" wrote in message s.com... For a while I had to nurse my dd with my finger against her mouth, so that when she would start to bite down I could break the latch quick, and rescue myself! I would say no bite nunnies, and then end the nursing session. The lansinoh is the only thing that I can think of that is safe to use for your nipples, maybe an ice pack would make it feel better? We both cried when I put him down, but it took only three or four times and he got the idea with no nursing strikes or, as far as I can tell so far, psychological damage to either of us. -- Sara, accompanied by the baby barnacle (I check this e-mail account infrequently) http://postpartum.meetup.com/ |

Thanks! : . : * ~ * : . : Sharon : . : * ~ * : . Responding on request: :-) First, you need to figure out when she is likely to bite. Usually it is at the end of a feed when she is no longer hungry. Look for it then. Second, you need to know that when she is fully latched on, she cannot bite. She will slip down onto the end of the nipple to bite. If she starts slipping down, she is likely to bite. Latch her off and back on correctly. If she will not latch on correctly but keeps slipping down, end the nursing session. She will quickly figure out what not to do. Third, how to latch her off. Don't just pull her off the breast. She will grab the nipple with her gums/teeth, and stretch it out about a foot! :-( Press her face into your breast. She will quickly open her mouth to breathe. Latch her off when she opens her mouth. If you follow this routine, you should have her trained in a couple of days without any more biting incidents. Good luck, Larry |
