My son will be 5 on Aug. 5th and my wife has signed him up but we are worried
that he wont be ready. He hasnt been away from us much at all. We tried to
sign him up for pre-school but they were all full. What is generally the right
age for them to start kind.?

In the UK, children tend to start pre school at age 3, if parents dont want
them to start pre school, then 'reception' starts at age 4 which is full
time school!
we probably start our children far too young in the UK, im dreading the
thought of my daughter starting, but it is the law.

It varies, but most kids start about that age. Some people keep kids out for
a variety of reasons but it's a very personal decision. What is the age
cutoff in your area? Is it full day or half day K?

It's hard for anyone here to tell you what to do since we don't know your
child. If you have half day K, I'd probably send him.

Where I live, we have full day Kindergarten from the first day of school and
it's VERY academic. I've taught in this school system so I know. FWIW, the
age cutoff is 12/31. My ds's birthday is October and we are seriously
considering holding him out. There are other factors that we are considering
in this decision obviously. Those, combined with the full day of very
academic Kindergarten is making us consider it carefully. Thankfully we have
some time on our side. JMO

This has been discussed quite a bit in the misc.kids groups so a google
search might bring you some more information. Also, while you may get
answers here, misc.kids will probably bring you more and really is a more
appropriate place if you haven't already posted there. HTH.

Where I am in NC they have to be 5 by Oct 16 to go to kindergarten. I'd be
worried honestly about sending a child to kindergarten cold. He's not been
in any kind of toddler or preschool playgroup or anything at all?

My second started kindy right after turning 5 in
August. I think it really depends on the kid and the
class. Some kids are more mature and more self controlled
and more interested in school and more able to sit and
pay attention and follow classroom rules for a bit, and
others aren't. In some schools kindergartens are very
academic and virtually all the kids will have had lots
of daycare or preschool experience, and others aren't
like that.
Personally, I would try to start kids at five
unless there was a compelling reason not to. Starting
them later may not buy a whole lot on the early end,
and it may be a significant liability when you've got
a kid who's significantly older than most of his peers
in jr. high and high school. Some kids really aren't
ready to start at their particular school if they're
an early five, so you have to base it on your child's
abilities and temperment. Contact the school and talk
to a kindy teacher to find out what expectations are
at the beginning of they year. They may also have a
kindy readiness screening of some sort.

Best wishes,
Ericka

I dont know about your state but I think the age that children have to be in
school or enrolled as a homeschooler is 6. We are planning on homeschooling
but do not have to send in a lesson plan until Bonnie is 6.

I was a bit worried about this when starting both Jake and Teddy since neither
had ever been away from me or enrolled in any type of school setting. But they
had no problems at all, even though up to a year before Teddy refused to
participate at Vacation Bible School and would just lie on the floor! He was a
model student from the very start of kindergarten. It so much depends on the
personality of the child.

Remember that when we were kids lots of us started school cold with first
grade, and we did okay!

Boys especially often have a hard time if they have birthdays close to the
cutoff. A friend of mine started her son on time (his birthday was September
28 and our cutoff was September 30) and she had to pull him out midyear. If I
were in doubt at all, I would keep him at home.

My son turned 2 in February and we're getting a lot of social pressure to
sign him up for school in the fall, when he'll be 2 1/2. I know that it's
fine if he's not in school and he's extremely attached to me...AND doesn't
do very well in kid's gym classes, birthday parties, etc. I've been
struggling with this as well. I know that I didn't start until I was 4 and
I was just fine. I hate the idea of forcing my son to separate in school at
2 1/2, which in my book is still a baby.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I'll probably send him some time between 2
1/2 and kindergarten!
