Oh come on... a generation or two ago it was routine for kids to start K
without having gone to preschool!

But kindergarten isn't anything like what it was
a generation or two ago.

Best wishes,
Ericka

Amen to that. I am constantly amazed by what DS is learning in kindergarten!

Apparently I made the world's most almighty fuss about kindergarten, even
though I *had* been to preschool (which was rare then), I *was* one of the
oldest in the class, it was only a half day class and not remarkable for
academic content, etc. Oh, and I was a girl (girls are supposedly more mature,
yada yada). You really Just Never Know.

I settled down eventually, and actually it was the only year of elementary
school I really liked.

In the UK, children tend to start pre school at age 3, if parents dont want
them to start pre school, then 'reception' starts at age 4 which is full
time school!
we probably start our children far too young in the UK, im dreading the
thought of my daughter starting, but it is the law.

The law in the UK says you must provide your child with an education
which can be either at school or at home. As long as you are providing
the curriculum at home your child doesn't have to go to school.

True, but the main difference is in the level of academics. The social
stuff is pretty much the same, and that is where a child who had never
been to preschool would be most likely to differ from a child who had.
(A child doesn't need to go to preschool to get basic pre-k academics,
and going to preschool doesn't guarantee that the child WOULD get
them. (Preschools vary widely in the amount of stress they place on
academics.)

I really don't think that's true. I think when
you up the ante on the academics, that fundamentally changes
the social situation. You're asking the kids to sit for
longer, concentrate for longer, keep quite for longer, etc.
I think the social expectations are *quite* different from
what they were, primarily as a result of the increased
academics.

Best wishes,
Ericka
