Default wait lists for preschools?

How common is it for there to be a waiting list to get on to a
preschool? I just called our school of choice and we are on the wait
list for the 2007/2008 school year! Sheesh - DS is only (almost) 2.5!
The only ones without a wait lista around here are the
super-expensive chain daycare/preschools.

All preschools (all, er, 2 of them) my kids have attended have had wait
lists. In both cases, I know kids from the wait list (whatever the heck
their criteria was eludes me) who 'got in'.

Crazy world, no?

My kids have both been on wait lists for preschool - my two year old has
been on the list at the school we want since she was 2 months old, and
she has a spot for the fall. I think it depends largely on where you
live, but in our area it is really common.

It's very common here, especially at this time of year, when they're not
sure how many of their current students are reenrolling. Alli's program puts
everyone on the waiting list until early May, when they start looking at
Summer enrollment, and July, when they start looking at fall enrollment.

In our area, it is the super-expensive chain daycare/preschool that has the
wait list. It's pretty common here, it seems.

Default wait lists for preschools?

Hi --

Where we live (greater Washington DC) wait lists are very common. Many
pre-Ks are on a first come, first served system, so getting on a waiting
list just means that you applied late. Some of the schools that go on to
elementray and beyond have more arcane criteria. Wait lists just mean
that there aren't enough spots to go around at the more popular
schools.

Actually, due to increases in local rents, pre-K and daycare spaces are
just getting plain difficult to find in the first place. Several places
locally went under due to rent increases or loss of leases.

Good luck,

Pretty common, depending on the school. The Montesorri school at the
YMCA in Cheyenne, Wyoming has at least a nominal waiting list. They
will make "normal" kids wait longer for disadvantaged children,
though. When my nephew was originally supposed to live with us (long
story, not going to get into it now) and didn't, the director said,
"For him, someone else can wait."

My daughter attended that school for about a year, before we decided
on the homeschooling thing.

Totally! I have been pretty much assured he will get in, but it floors
me that I have to sign him up at age 2 for a school he will attend when
he is almost 4!

Thanks to everyone for your responses. I was just shocked.

Very. Which is a problem for us; we're moving.

I think it's common where we are (outskirts of DC metro). DS is almost
ready to go to DD's Montessori school. He won't have to wait (several
kids are waitlisted) because he's a sibling of a current student. But
the waitlist is only for the upcoming school year (06-07).
